As a Postdoctoral Fellow with CSIRO Health and Biosecurity, you will have a unique opportunity to be closely involved in the development of a new, state-of-the-art research program in CSIRO. Based at the CSIRO Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL), a high-containment facility designed to allow scientific research into the most dangerous infectious agents in the world, you will access multiple training opportunities to build your scientific career. You will work across CSIRO research groups with expertise in immunology and molecular biology and join an active research team consisting of multiple postdocs, students and technicians.
Specifically you will:
• Use bioinformatics approaches to investigate the implications of viral mutations in influenza genes.
• Undertake a comparison of viral isolates based on viral fitness and host/pathogen interactions.
• Perform in vitro and in vivo studies to assess the impact of changes in host species or viral sequence.
• Undertake regular reviews of relevant literature and patents.
• Undertake cooperative research with the partner organisation, the WHO CC for Reference and Research on Influenza located at the Doherty Institute in Melbourne.
• Produce high quality scientific papers suitable for publication.

Salary: AU $83k to AU $91k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

As a minimum requirement, you will hold a doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as Immunology, Virology or Pathology. You will also have:
• High-level communication and team skills, including a record of publications in quality journals and a history of professional behaviours.
• Experience in in vitro and in vivo experimentation with a respiratory virus (preferably influenza) involving experimentation in laboratory and/or non-laboratory animals.
• Experience in virology methods, e.g. virus culture, TCID50, etc.
• Experience in using or developing and/or utilizing bioinformatics approaches for viral genomics.
• Capability in molecular biology techniques, including PCR, qRT-PCR, gene cloning and sequencing.
• A record of science innovation and creativity.

To be eligible for this postdoctoral fellowship, you must have less than 3 years of relevant research experience since gaining your PhD.
