The laboratory of plasticity models for aging and neurodegeneration (PMAN) offers an opportunity for a PhD position for an outstanding candidate to build up a neurogenic plasticity computational model to envision prospective therapies of neurodegenerative disorders. The major objective of our lab is to examine groundbreaking questions on the functional and molecular role of newly-generated neurons in the adult brain. Using a variety of modern techniques (molecular and cellular biology, electrophysiology, genetics, opto-/chemogenetics, modeling, and neurocomputation); the aim is to link experimental neuroscience to computational modeling to provide an explicit bidirectional prediction for complex performance and network neurogenic reserve for functional compensation to the brain demands in health and disease.

This PhD position is aimed to perform multimodal multi-level experimental readouts (molecular, cellular, and network) to implement an integrative comprehensive bottom-up neurogenic network model for neuronal reserve therapies of a specific neurodegenerative disorder. These experiments will use a combination of approaches including in vitro and ex vivo electrophysiology and imaging in human-derived neurons and transgenic mice. The successful candidate will take part in all aspects of the project, from experimental design, data generation, modeling and analyses, interpretation and writing of the manuscript.
The PMAN lab is looking for an enthusiastic, talented, creative, team-player fluent in English with a strong commitment to research. The candidate should preferably have a master degree in neurocomputation, neuroscience, computer science, and biomedical engineering or related disciplines.
The successful candidate will implement a neurocomputational model and complex statistical analyses based on large-scale neuronal electrical activity and live cell imaging. The candidate will also carry out experiments by exploiting various tools: cell culture / Immunostaining and advance microscopy (confocal and calcium imaging) / in vitro and ex vivo Electrophysiology (multielectrode arrays and patch clamp recordings). Therefore, a robust previous coursework and experience in programming (Matlab and Python), theoretical and practical background in modeling, biostatistics, and complex data analysis methods are required. Additionally, a previous experience or an affinity for experimental neuroscience and electrophysiology is an advantage, but not necessarily required.
