Postdoctoral position: Electrochemist for evaluating platinum-free fuel cells at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is the largest department of 13 at Chalmers with approximately 320 employees, divided into four research divisions. We are situated at campus Johanneberg in the middle of Gothenburg and perform research ranging from fundamental and applied chemistry to chemical engineering of industrial plants. We conduct teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, as well as postgraduate level in these areas.

We tackle global challenges in the areas of health, energy, sustainability and transport by developing new knowledge and enabling technologies in the areas of nano- and materials science and chemical production methods. Our vision is “Through curiosity and knowledge towards a sustainable world”.
Information about the project
In the ongoing transition to a more sustainable society we are active in the development of a new catalyst for hydrogen fuel cells that is free from noble metals. We are now in the process of incorporating this catalyst in large area membrane electrode assemblies and in a full scale fuel cell stack of 1 kW. For this we search for a postdoc with expertise in electrochemical evaluation and modelling of electrochemical data with experience from evaluating individual membrane electrode assembies and fuel cell stacks.

The project is carried out together with the group of Prof. Torbjörn Thiringer, Electrical Engineering, who has expertise in the design of power electronics and in electrical characterization of energy storage systems and the analysis of electric power data under static and dynamic conditions of their operation.

The project will involve collaborations with other group members and is related to our recent papers in Chem. Mater., 25 (2013) 856-861; Fuel cells, 16, (2016), 4-22; Fuel cells, 16, (2016), 23-31; J. Power Sources, 357, (2017), 87-96; J. Phys. Chem. C. 121, (2017), 21827–21835; J. Mater. Chem. A, 6, (2018), 3116-3125.

Major responsibiliy
You will work with electrochemical evaluation of membrane electrode assemblies and fuel cell stacks based on noble metal-free fuel cell catalysts and employ modelling to interpret electrochemical data.

Key parts of the work will be related to
• Rotating disc electrode, single cell fuel cell and fuel cell stack measurements
• Modelling of electrochemical data
• Correlating electrochemical performance with preparation procedures of membrane electrode assemblies

The position also includes collaborating with PhD and MSc students in the two groups and is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry and the public sector.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
To qualify as a postdoc candidate, you must have a PhD level degree in Chemistry or Materials Science or equivalent with a focus on electrochemistry and electrochemical evaluation methods for electrode materials. Hands on experience with electrochemical measurements and modelling of electrochemical data are mandatory. Competence in CFD modelling, structural characterisation methods, colloidal processing, and carbon materials synthesis are meritorius.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the work, the candidate is expected to have good collaboration skills and be able to communicate in English, both orally and in writing.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
