The research group of Matthias Wilmanns has a long-standing record in structural biology on research themes of medical relevance. Our main research interest is on structures of large protein translocation systems and structural dynamics of giant muscle proteins. We additionally collaborate on specific research projects with several clinical groups with interests in tuberculosis, cancer and hereditary diseases. Most of our projects require integrative structural biology methods including X-ray crystallography, electron microscopy and complementary biophysical and biochemical approaches. The group shares expertise and research infrastructures with other EMBL research groups in Hamburg.
This project aims to apply and expand recently established techniques to determine novel structures of proteins and protein complexes from crystals grown directly in eukaryotic cells. You will apply those to ongoing projects of high scientific and medical relevance from our research group (for further details, see www.embl-hamburg.de/research/unit/wilmanns/ and recent publications). In a further step, we are aiming to use these crystals for time-resolved structural studies to investigate biological function. The project is supported by an international consortium, which provides ample opportunities for exchange, collaboration and multidisciplinary training. For structure determination, we offer access to leading structural biology beamlines operated by the EMBL Hamburg Unit, nearby beamline facilities operated by the European X-ray Free Electron Laser, as well as partner facilities in Sweden.
You should have a PhD in a relevant field, proven record of scientific accomplishments, international experience, scientific ambition and excellent communication skills, and previously demonstrated expertise in X-ray crystallography and biophysical approaches including sample preparation (molecular biology, heterologous expression in eukaryotic hosts, protein purification).

Additional expertise in biochemistry (in vitro and cell-based assays) and cell biology (including imaging) would be advantageous.
