The University of Michigan Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation invites applicants to apply for a postdoctoral research fellowship focused on qualitative, implementation and community-based participatory research (CBPR) with individuals with physical disabilities from urban environments. The postdoctoral fellow be responsible coordinating an internally funded project, Enhancing the Health of Individuals with Physical Disabilities through Knowledge Translation Strategies – Implementation of Evidence-Based Interventions in Clinics and Communities, and assisting with qualitative research being conducted as part of the newly funded Investing Disability Factors and Promoting Environmental Access for Health Living Rehabilitation Research Training Center (IDEAL – RRTC), funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR). Research for both projects will focus on working with community members and organizations in the Flint and Detroit communities to identify their needs and priorities as well as the individual and environmental factors that serve as supports or barriers to healthy aging and then facilitating the implementation of relevant evidence-based health promoting interventions in those communities. This post-doctoral position will provide the candidate opportunities to refine expertise in qualitative, multimethod and CBP research and to enhance writing and knowledge translation skills. The fellow work most closely with Dr. Michelle Meade, PI / Director of the RRTC, facilitating focus groups with individuals with moderate to severe physical disabilities in low-income, racially diverse communities in Southeastern Michigan, analyzing qualitative data, writing manuscripts and conducting other knowledge translation activities. The fellow will have opportunities to learn how to write grants and to develop collaborations with colleagues in other disciplines.

- Participate with all aspects of research, including subject recruitment, scheduling, data collection, processing, and data dissemination
- Ensure that all research activities are conducted following the policies and procedures of University of Michigan
- Both assisting with and leading the development of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals
- Participate regularly in didactic training and laboratory meetings
PhD in Rehabilitation Psychology, Public Health, Applied Anthropology, Social Work or a related field. The following qualifications will be considered for this position:
- Experience conducting qualitative research and analyzing qualitative data
- Knowledge and experience with working with individuals from low-income and racially diverse communities
- Experience in conducting literature reviews and in writing manuscripts for peer reviewed publications; one (or more) published papers should accompany the application, with an explanation of the responsibilities the applicant had in its development attached
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail and organization skills
- Applied knowledge of NVIVO or qualitative software as well as SPSS statistic software
- Able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
