Position HighlightsThe NIRCam Team as part of the University of Arizona Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory invites an application for a JWST Arizona/Steward Postdocs in Early galaxies and Reionization (JASPER) Scholar position. The position will start in June, 2022. JASPER Scholars will be appointed a year-to-year appointment, contingent upon funding and performance. The NIRCam is using 400 hours of guaranteed observing time in collaboration with the NIRSpec Team to execute JADES, the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey. This survey and a JADES-related GO program, “UDF Medium Band Survey: Using H-alpha Emission to Reconstruct Ly-alpha Escape during the Epoch of Reionization” use imagery in a selection of NIRCam filters that will permit accurate estimation of emission line fluxes. Preference will be given to applicants who are experienced in the selection of z>6 galaxies, studying their environments, and analyzing their ionizing properties, all within the context of photometry and groundbased Lyman-alpha spectroscopy. JASPER Scholars will have full access to the observational facilities of the University of Arizona, including the 2×8.4m Large Binocular Telescope, the 6.5m MMT Telescope, the two 6.5m Magellan Telescopes, the 2.3m Bok Telescope, the 1.8m Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope, the 10m Heinrich-Hertz Submillimeter Telescope, the Kitt Peak 12m mm-wave Telescope as well as advanced computing facilities at Steward Observatory. The University of Arizona is a full member of the SDSS-V, DESI and LSST collaborations.
Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance; paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; access to UA recreation and cultural activities; and more! The University of Arizona has been recognized for our innovative work-life programs. Duties & ResponsibilitiesAnalyze data from the JADES survey and determine which galaxies have strong emission lines at z>=6.Measure the environments of the galaxies found in 1. and estimate which are found in clusters.Work with other team members to improve photometric redshifts based on redshifts from emission lines from the NIRSpec part of the collaboration.Help other team members interpret mass and luminosity functions in the context of emission line properties.
Minimum QualificationsA Ph.D. in Astronomy, Physics or related field. The selected candidate must have a conferred Ph.D. upon hire.
Preferred QualificationsExperience in the selection of z>6 galaxies, studying their environments, and analyzing their ionizing properties, all within the context of photometry and ground-based Lyman-alpha spectroscopy.
