The Department of Political Science recruits 2 Postdoctoral Fellows (Assistant Professor) with backgrounds from political science or closely related fields. The successful applicants will work full time in the Oslo Nuclear Project´s Strategic Stability research cluster. Oslo Nuclear Project is a research program supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Defence, The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs,and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The appointment is for a fixed, non-tenured term of 4 years with a 25% requirement for teaching.
The two fellowships will focus on one or more of the following topics: drivers of nuclear arms races and competition, arms control and strategic stability.
More about the position
The postdoctoral fellows are expected to conduct research activities along with the PI and other members of the team. The postdoctoral fellows are expected to contribute to research dissemination, outreach and joint project activities.
The applicant should have a background (with publications) in political science or related fields studying nuclear weapons and international security, preferably with experience in applying empirical methodological approaches and/or specialization in European, Russian or Asian country perspectives.
The Oslo Nuclear Project is led by Professor Målfrid Braut-Hegghammer and the two postdoctoral fellowships are expected to run from 2021-2025. We encourage applicants to read about the Oslo Nuclear Project and its activities before applying. Women and minority candidates are encouraged to apply.
The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines. Appointed postdoctoral fellows are expected to acquire basic pedagogical competency in the course of their fellowship period. Applicants must write a research proposal that lays out a promising research agenda, including a publication plan that can be fulfilled in the course of four years. The Postdoctoral fellow is expected to contribute to research activities and dissemination within the Oslo Nuclear project.
Qualification requirements
A comprehensive assessment of the applicant’s scientific qualifications forms the basis of appointment.
- Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (Ph.D) in Political Science or a closely related discipline before taking up the post.
- For applicants who have yet to receive their PhD degree, the Doctoral dissertation must have been submitted for evaluation before the application deadline (December 1, 2021). Such applicants should note the date of submission of their PhD in the cover letter. Appointment is dependent on successful completion of the defense of the doctoral thesis.
Other qualifications:
- Applicants must have a very good command of English (written and orally).
- Previous research on and familiarity with one or more of the topics covered by ONP is an advantage
The evaluation of applications is based primarily on documented, academic qualifications and the project plan. In addition, personal suitability and motivation are considered. The most promising candidates are invited to interviews.
