The Institute of Clinical Sciences, within Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg is searching for a postdoctoral fellow. The research group, which is newly started and fast growing, conducts clinical epidemiological research on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and celiac disease. The aim for most of these studies is to identify risk factors for these conditions, describe their prognosis and risk of associated diseases.

This position concerns the work on a Nordic IBD project called PREVENT IBD (“Prospective evaluation of early-life environmental triggers for pediatric inflammatory bowel disease”), with Associate Professor Karl Mårild as project leader/PI. In this project we aim to broadly study potential early-life environmental risk factors for the development of IBD. Data from both registers, questionnaires and biological material are used. The project is conducted in close collaboration with other researchers, nationally and internationally.

Subject area description

Clinical epidemiological research on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and celiac disease. In this project we aim to broadly study potential early-life environmental risk factors for the development of IBD.

Job assignments

You will independently conduct your own research, contribute to project management and to other people’s research within the project. The work includes all parts of research, in particular manuscript writing and supervision of PhD students/master students, but also statistical and epidemiological analysis, to contribute to research ideas, planning and funding applications, and contribute to scientific group meetings within the project.

Besides your main focus on the PREVENT IBD project, research assignments may include other IBD and celiac disease-related studies within the group.

Eligibility

To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject. Since postdoctoral constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years from the application deadline.

Assessment

The applicant should have a PhD in epidemiology-public health, statistics, or similar, with a focus on research on register and/or large-scale cohort data and good epidemiological knowledge. Applicants should have experience of research with register data and / or cohort data. Good knowledge within the fields of gastroenterology (ex IBD, celiac disease), pediatrics, medicine, is a requirement.

Other requirements include very good ability to independently draft manuscript, summarize results in English, as well as to independently plan experiments, execute statistical and epidemiological analysis. Highly proficient in spoken and written English is necessary. Knowledge of Swedish or other Nordic language is an asset.

Documented clinical and/or research experience within gastroenterology (e.g., IBD, celiac disease), pediatrics or medicine is an asset. Previous experience with the statistical programs R, STATA or SAS and experience of data from national registers and large-scale cohorts in Sweden or other Nordic countries is also a strong asset.

It is expected that you can both conduct research in a highly independent manner as well as the ability to cooperate with others given that the project is a close collaboration with several clinical and epidemiolocal research groups. We value a candidate who is driven, organizational, meticulous, effective and independent. We value good communication skills and scientific integrity. Previous experience of supervision and teaching is an advantage. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Employment

The employment is limited (temporary) for 24 months, 100 % of full-time and is placed at the Institute of Clinical Sciences, Pediatrics. Starting date; As soon as possible
