The Department of Applied Physics (http://physics.aalto.fi) at the School of Science is seeking for

Postdoctoral Researchers in Ultrasensitive Bolometers and Superconducting Qubits, Experimental

The Department of Applied Physics is looking for highly motivated scientists to work on several prestigious projects (see details below).

1. Ultrasensitive bolometers for cryogenic circuit characterization and/or quantum microwaves. This position is funded by The Finnish Research Impact Foundation in a project aiming for developing a cryogenic spectrum analyzer based on an ultrasensitive bolometer. You will be working in the Quantum Computing and Devices (QCD) Labs which is a creative team of amazing talent in its field. At the QCD Labs, we have recently demonstrated the most sensitive bolometer ever built [see for example Kokkoniemi et al., Nature (2020)] and your goal is to utilize this technology in developing a spectrum analyzer that works at millikelvin temperatures. The work is carried out in close co-operation with the most successful company producing dry dilution refrigerators, Bluefors, where you will be frequently visiting. We are also developing superconducting single-photon microwave and terahertz detectors in other projects and great synergy is expected here. We are also expecting to have another bolometer project starting soon involving bolometry of the quantum properties of microwaves and superconducting qubits, to which we also seek for candidates.

2. Fabrication of superconducting qubits and/or ultrasensitive bolometers. This position is funded by the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Quantum Technology (QTF) that is an outstanding working environment with over 100 researchers investigating superconducting and silicon-based quantum devices, and nanostructures. The aim is here to focus on the fabrication of superconducting qubits based on Josephson junctions. You may also learn and fabricate bolometers. The qubits will be used in QCD Labs to carry out top-level science experiments.

The QCD group was established in 2007 and has since produced more than 180 papers on quantum physics including top journals such as Nature, Science, and Nature Physics. See our Media Room for highlights. The QCD Labs has four dilution refrigerators complemented with the measurement facilities of OtaNano that also hosts an impressive 2600-m2 Micronova cleanroom. Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in condensed matter physics or equivalent on a topic of relevance. (Alternatively, statement that the applicant will have his/her doctoral thesis defended before the start of the contract).
  • Solid publication/study record in bolometers or nanofabrication, or an exceptionally strong record in a related field
  • Good command of English
  • Strong ambition and results-oriented attitude towards excellence in science and technology at the highest international level

Experience on sample design, modeling, data analysis, and theory of microwave circuits and especially superconducting qubits is highly appreciated. Experience on superconductor proximity effect is beneficial.

Salary and duration

A typical contract will be initially for two years with possible extension. We seek to fill these positions as soon as possible (project starts in January 2022) but starting dates are negotiable. The standard salary level of postdoctoral researchers is between EUR 3700 and EUR 4080 per month depending on the seniority of the candidate. The annual total workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1612 hours. The contracts include Aalto University occupational health care. The positions will be located at the Aalto University Otaniemi Campus.
