This appointment is to support the Australian Research Council (ARC) funded Future Fellowship project “Socio-spatial implications of smart city development in India”. The project aims to generate extensive new knowledge on the complex socio-spatial implications of smart city development; and the ways in which they have been further consolidated, expedited, and elevated in response to COVID, and to stimulate the pandemic-hit economies. It makes a significant contribution to smart urbanism discourse globally with a focus on equity and its special role at times of crisis. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will provide critical research support to the project, and will also undertake limited teaching as required by the School. The position will be under the direction of the Future Fellow (the lead investigator), Associate Professor Tooran Alizadeh

Specifically, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will:

  • undertake research or scholarly activity contributing to the project’s research agenda under the guidance of the lead investigator, including:
  • contribute to publications and other project outputs, including journal articles, professional publications, events, and reflective workshops
  • contribute to all research tasks, including data collection, interviews, site visits, development of the Smart City Roadmap (an online tool)
  • actively participate in research seminars and conferences to advance the project research program
  • assist in the coordination and management of project-related activities, including:
  • contribute to the project management including management of the research operations and activities (incl. project deliverables, timelines, and budget); developing research protocols, undertaking core aspects of research work and contributing to analysis and key findings
  • manage the development of the Smart City Roadmap (An online platform, informed by the interviews embedded in the project, which will go beyond currently available simplified smart city dashboards; and provide a platform for cities to share and learn from each other.)
  • inform research progress and maintain communications with other relevant stakeholders, and prepare project briefs, progress reports, and media outputs
  • contribute to teaching and provide teaching support to the School of Architecture, Design and Planning up to a maximum of 0.2 FTE:
  • teach in the urban design and planning units within the School (undergraduate and/or postgraduate)
  • coordination and delivery in whole or part of selected core and elective units of study.

About you

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate who possesses:

  • a PhD degree in urbanism, urban and regional planning, geography, or a related discipline, completed in the past 5 years
  • research track record and/or informed knowledge of urbanisation challenges and opportunities in India (or similar contexts in the Global South) – with specific focus on smart urbanism
  • ability to communicate in Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Marathi, or Odia
  • experience in preparing and editing reports and/or publications, and experience in collaborative authorship
  • experience in successfully teaching urban design and planning to undergraduate and/or master’s-level students in a faculty of the built environment or related areas
  • demonstrated understanding of WHS responsibilities and actively ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of yourself and others at work in accordance with your delegated authority, as described in the University’s WHS Policy and Procedures and role responsibilities
