This position will be part of the DFG Emmy-Neother Junior Research Group “Ecology and Evolution of dark matter fungi in aquatic biofilms”. The aim of the research is to understand the fundamental ecology and evolution of the largely enigmatic group of aquatic fungi. By combining microdissection, high-throughput culturing, and molecular based single sequencing of genomes and transcripts, we generate extensive fungal reference data that serves as a key resource to discuss early fungal evolution and aquatic adaptations based on phylogenomics and fungal inter-actions.

An der Professur für Waldinventur und nachhaltige Nutzung ist zum 01.02.2023 eine Teilzeit-Stelle (TV-L E13, 65 %) als Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in (m/w/d) zu besetzen. Diese Stelle ist befristet bis 30.06.2025. Inhalt der Stelle ist die Bearbeitung eines durch das Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft geförderten Projektes „FORECO“ im Rahmen einer Dissertation an der TU München. Ein neuer, risikosensitiver Mehrziel-Optimierungsansatz soll mit Monte-Carlo-Simulationen kombiniert (und weiterentwickelt) werden, um Extremereignisse und die Erholung des Waldes nach Störungen in eine umfassende Bewertung von Waldbewirtschaftungsalternativen zu integrieren. Der Ansatz besteht aus der Optimierung der Baumartenzusammensetzung und der Bewirtschaftung auf Bestandsebene, anschließenden Tests der Robustheit der Ökosystemleistungen verschiedener Waldalternativen unter dem Einfluss von Extremereignissen und einer Bewertung der Erholungsfähigkeit der Bestände (Geschwindigkeit der Erholung verschiedener Indikatoren für Ökosystemleistungen nach Störungen). Die optimierte Zusammensetzung und Bewirtschaftung der Bestände wird das Wissen über die Erholung der Bestände aus weiteren Projektteilen einbeziehen und dann robuste und widerstandsfähige Waldtypen als Input-Informationen für das prozessbasierte, dynamische vegetations-terrestrische Ökosystemmodell LPJ-GUESS liefern, um diese Alternativen auf größere räumliche Ebenen auszudehnen.

Diese Stelle ist befristet bis 31.10.2025. Inhalt der Stelle ist die Bearbeitung eines durch das Bayerische Staatsministerium für Ernährung, Landwirtschaft und Forsten geförderten Projektes „FeNEU: Ein innovatives Instrument für die forstliche Planung in Bayern zur besseren Berücksichtigung geänderter Waldaufbauformen, Biodiversität und Ökosystemleistungen“ im Rahmen einer Dissertation an der TU München. Im Rahmen des Projektes sollen vorhandene Auswertungsverfahren der Forsteinrichtung (mittelfristige Forstbetriebsplanung) überprüft und weiterentwickelt werden. Am Ende des Projektes sollen die neuen bzw. weiterentwickelten Ansätze und Methoden neben etablierten Methoden mit einer projektintern erstellten, primär auf Bayern angepassten Softwarelösung in einer ersten, grundlegenden Version, abgebildet werden können. Aufgrund des großen Bedarfs soll diese Version besonders auf die Verhältnisse des Körperschaftswaldes ausgerichtet sein.

The German Heart Center of the Free State of Bavaria associated to the Technical University of Munich is a clinic with international reputation and a state of the art technical and medical equipment. The Laboratory of cardiovascular inflammation at the Department of Cardiology is seeking a PhD student (m/f/d) The project aims to screen and validate potential therapeutic gene targets from findings of population genetic studies in large human cohorts including genome- and transcriptome- wide association studies (GWAS and TWAS). The screening will be conducted in cell lines or human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived cells by advanced genome editing methods, such as CRISPR-based gene knockout, transcriptional activation, and direct-capture Perturb-seq. The validation and therapeutic evaluation will be performed in an atherosclerosis mouse model.

PhD-/Postdoc-position (m/f/d) Numerical mathematics

We offer a PhD- or Postdoc-position for the project Multiphysics simulations for geodynamics on heterogeneous exascale systems.

The project is a multidisciplinary project combining the fields of mathematics, computer science, geophysics, and high-performance computing. Each field is represented by a dedicated project partner, which brings in their experience. These are the chair of “Numerical Analysis” at TUM, the chair of “System Simulation” at FAU, the chair of “Geophysics” at LMU, and finally, the LRZ with their knowledge about supercomputers.

Firstly, the project aims to improve the performance of the matrix-free finite-element-based framework HyTeG, in particular by techniques for data reduction through surrogate operators. Furthermore, we aim to extend the framework with mixed-precision approaches, which will be implemented and analyzed.

Secondly, we aim at a volume coupling of the high-performance packages waLBerla, HyTeG, and MesaPD to solve complex multiphysics problems. The coupling is done across package boundaries. This also requires more sophisticated approaches in load-balancing.

Finally, the newly developed algorithms will be tested and verified with applications from geodynamics.

PhD position | Sustainable Energy Materials | Electrochemistry

We test novel catalysts for sustainable energy conversion processes such as polymer electrolyte fuel cells or electrolyzers, H2O2 production, or electrochemical CO2 reduction. To do so, the stability of newly developed catalysts is of pressing concern. You will continue our research line around stability assessment of novel catalysts by electrochemical flow cell measurements that will be coupled to on-line analytics. Specifically, an in-house designed flow cell is coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and the stability against dissolution will be assessed. This will be done with collaboration partners around the world. The workflow spans from physical chemistry to material science and engineering. Scientific Employee for the Design of Intelligent and Resilient Production Systems (m/w/d)

The Institute of Automation and Information Systems is one of the leading institutes for software engineering in automation. We are part of the TUM School of Engineering and Design and maintain strong links with the computer science community. One of our key research areas is the design and operation of intelligent networked production systems. In the competitive globalized economy and with an increased need for sustainability and resource-efficiency, the resilience of such production systems is key, achieved by advanced means of Fault-tolerant Control, including the avoidance and automatic recovery of faults. Especially faults on the field-level are oftentimes the reason for downtime, requiring resilient and intelligent field-level devices. Due to real-time constraints, the decision-making process on the field-level has to be highly efficient, necessitating appropriate information representations and algorithms. On the machine-level, (semi-)automatic recovery from faults and restarts have a huge potential for increasing the Overall Equipment Effectiveness. The design of such resilient systems is complemented by alarm analysis, e.g., root-cause analyses, which we investigate regarding implementation both within the field-level and using an architecture for distributed computing between field, edge, and cloud-level devices. Thereby, scalability in horizontal (additional cloud-connected processes) and vertical direction (more complex process observation, prediction, and intervention) are essential for a continuously expanding intelligent reconfigurability platform. We are currently looking for a PhD candidate to join our motivated team in this research area.

Ph.D. student for protein engineering of imaging tools (f/m/d)

The CellEngineering group at the Chair of Biological Imaging (CBI) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging (IBMI) at Helmholtz Munich and is looking for a highly qualified and motivated PhD. student (f/m/d) for protein engineering: focus on development of genetically encoded sensors. Genetically encoded sensors are a major tool to unravel the functioning of life on the cellular level. We are developing dedicated genetically encoded sensors for optoacoustics measurements. The candidate will focus on engineering chimeric proteins that show a small-molecule binding dependent change of photophysics. The candidate will further explore and exploit their intricate and exciting mechanisms and driving such proteins towards a use in life-science imaging applications. The projects will be very divers and include methods from protein-engineering and high-throughput screening over photo-physical and structural characterization to mammalian cell culture and eventual in vivo application. The work will be conducted in close collaboration with other laboratories of the Technical University Munich (TUM) and HMGU that are leading in the respective research areas, e.g. in vivo application or protein structure elucidation. Hence, the position is an exciting interface between protein-engineering, basic photophysical research, development of molecular tools as well as imaging. Beyond that, the project is part of a larger European funded initiative to expand the possibilities of life-science in vivo imaging – working together with renowned researcher from the Netherlands, Switzerland and France, focusing, for example, on physics (imaging setups) and computational studies (AI based analysis). Hence the successful candidate will not only develop new imaging agents but also function as the linking hub between the partner groups – resulting in truly interdisciplinary work.
