Applications are invited for a fully funded translational postdoctoral research position at the intersection of basic and clinical cancer research. The 2-year position is part of the Cancer Research Center Fellowship Program, and the recruited Fellow will work towards translating recent findings from basic research to biomarker development and improved cancer therapy.
To further develop outstanding cancer research in Zurich, the UZH and Medical Faculty have established the competitive Cancer Research Center (CRC) funding program supporting multidisciplinary, translational research projects of scientists and physician-scientists. A fully funded 2-year fellowship position is now available to work at the intersection of basic and clinical cancer research in the Altmeyer & Fink labs. Personalized cancer therapy aims at exploiting patient and tumor specific alterations for more targeted treatments. PARP inhibitors have recently entered the clinics to treat breast and ovarian cancer patients with mutations in the tumor suppressor genes BRCA1 and BRCA2. Recent in vitro findings in the Altmeyer lab revealed that putative biomarkers of PARP inhibitor sensitivity might exist beyond BRCA1/2 deficiency. The main objective of this project is to establish new tools and protocols to test in clinical samples, in close collaboration with the Gynecological Cancer Clinic headed by Prof. Dr. med. Daniel Fink at the USZ, the suitability of newly identified markers of PARP inhibitor sensitivity for improved patient stratification and more efficient therapies. The study involves the use of standard molecular biology and immunohistochemistry methods for marker quantification, and should bridge the basic research performed at the UZH Irchel Campus with the clinical research at the USZ in the center of Zurich.
Candidates should hold or expect to be awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in medical, biomedical or natural sciences. Applicants should have a strong scientific track record with at least one publication as first author in a high quality, peer reviewed journal. Prior experience with standard molecular biology techniques or clinical samples is beneficial. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in translational cancer research with an understanding of both basic molecular and clinical cancer research. Good communication and organizational skills will allow bridging the UZH and the USZ and enable smooth transfer of knowledge and reagents. As a good team player, the ideal candidate will fit into the two collaborating groups with ease and enjoy the interdisciplinary work.
