PhD Programs: 5+3 vs. 4+4 Schemes

Aarhus University offers unique flexibility for doctoral candidates through two primary models:

  • 5+3 Programme: This is the standard route for those who have already completed a 2-year Master’s degree (120 ECTS). First, candidates receive a regular salary for three years while completing their doctorate.
  • 4+4 Programme: This combined scheme allows you to start your PhD after just one year of Master’s studies. Next, you receive a Danish State Education Grant (SU) during the first part and transition to a full salary once your Master’s is completed.

Moreover, all PhD fellows at AU enjoy competitive salaries, with base rates starting around DKK 29,310 per month plus substantial pension contributions.

Prestigious Postdoctoral Fellowships

For experienced researchers, the Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies (AIAS) offers high-level fellowships. First, the AIAS-AUFF fellowships provide up to 10 scholars with 23 months of funding to pursue independent projects. Next, these roles include relocation support and access to cutting-edge research facilities.

Moreover, many postdoc positions at AU are funded by European Research Council (ERC) grants, focusing on diverse areas like human statistical genetics and quantum materials. Finally, these positions offer a vibrant interdisciplinary environment where you can collaborate with international peers.

How to Apply

The application process is handled through the university’s centralized Emply portal. First, ensure you have your CV, research statement, and academic transcripts ready in PDF format. Next, review the specific guidelines for your faculty, as requirements for portfolios and publications can vary.

Moreover, international applicants should check the “International Staff Mobility” (ISM) guide for help with housing and work permits. Finally, all applications must be submitted digitally through the online form attached to each job advertisement.
