The Danish Institute for Advanced Study (DIAS) seeks an outstanding candidate to fill a position at the Assistant Professor level in the field of socio-cultural market studies and Consumer Culture Theory.
The position is sponsored by the Department of Business & Management and starts March 1st, 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The department is located at University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in Odense.
The appointment is a unique position for the highly ambitious “rising star” who is looking for a long-term position in a very strong inter-disciplinary environment, permitting the candidate to pursue ideas with ground-breaking potential. The position runs for four years followed by the possibility of a subsequent two years of employment as an Associate Professor – this extension will be based on an evaluation procedure. Note that teaching obligations will be reduced in this position compared to a regular Assistant Professor position at SDU.
DIAS
DIAS aims to inspire ground-breaking ideas through the meeting of minds across the sciences and humanities. DIAS engages leading academics through its weekly lectures and quarterly colloquia. There is a strong focus on talent development of young researchers who work on game-changing ideas. A total of 25 DIAS Fellows from five faculties are gathered here, and the applicant will become one of them. Eminent academics are appointed as chairs and senior fellows, and in that capacity form the backbone of DIAS as they catalyze activities within their field.
DIAS offers an interdisciplinary research environment, where you will interact with the strongest researchers from the five faculties at University of Southern Denmark. Furthermore, DIAS offer substantial support in applications for further external funding from prestigious national and European funding schemes, e.g., Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions and the ERC starting grants.
More information about DIAS activities can be found at www.danish-ias.dk.
The candidate profile and institutional affiliation outside DIAS
We expect the applicant to have a PhD in social science, anthropology, sociology, business studies or similar, preferably with a particular interest in consumption and/or market phenomena. Since this position is attached to teaching on our program in Market & Management Anthropology, an anthropological background is particularly relevant, but other disciplinary backgrounds are also considered. Applicants that are addressing issues of environmental and/or social sustainability from a cross-disciplinary perspective are particularly welcome, but we value the candidate’s academic quality and potential high so other areas of specialization will also be considered. Finally, the position holds possibilities for developing and exploring new research ideas.
The successful applicant will be affiliated with the research unit Consumption, Culture and Commerce (CCC) at the Department of Business & Management. For more information about the department and its strategy, please visit the website https://www.sdu.dk/en/om_sdu/institutter_centre/i_marketing.
The CCC unit is an international and interdisciplinary hub for cultural research on consumption and markets. In addition to being a long-standing contributor to and one of the world’s leading research environments in the field of consumer culture theory (CCT), we strive to contribute to knowledge on consumption and commerce in broader disciplines such as marketing, anthropology and sociology. Our work critically unpacks consumption and market phenomena by exploring the workings and vicissitudes of culture and socio-economic systems. We investigate diverse topics and contexts, such as challenges of global socio-economic systems, sustainability issues in consumption, circular economies, cultural perspectives on emergent technologies and market processes, market and consumer logics in the health care sector and commercial symbolism and ideology.
Successful candidate(s) must be able and willing to support the Department of Business and Management in realizing its two overarching strategic objectives: First, we strive to produce original ideas through high-quality and pioneering research. Second, we want to address major societal challenges and to exchange knowledge with society through high-quality study programs and genuine engagement with societal actors and the wider public. The department values a diversity of competences and academic profiles, and thus applicants must present a clear and excellent academic profile. By academic profile we understand the combined quality of research, teaching and societal engagement. The successful candidate should have a strong international profile, a strong record of research publications, and have demonstrated exceptional potential to excel in scientific research. We expect the applicants to actively engage in the development of the research unit as well as contribute to the interdisciplinary research in DIAS.
