We are looking for a Principal Researcher to the Unit of Integrative Epidemiology at the Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet. The main research areas of the unit include neurodegenerative disease, psychiatric disorders, cancer, and women’s health. We strive for truly interdisciplinary research and integrate closely epidemiologic research with experimental and clinical research.

Description of the subject area

In psychiatric epidemiology, we are interested in the risk factors and health consequences of different psychiatric disorders, especially the ones that are known to be related to psychological stress such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, stress reaction, and adjustment disorders. We are specifically interested in the short- and long-term health consequences of stressful life events, including loss of a significant other due to death, societal and natural disasters, and receiving a diagnosis of life-threatening disease. Finally, we also study comorbidity patterns – phenotypic and genetic – between psychiatric disorders and somatic diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and infections (e.g., COVID-19).

Your mission

You will contribute expertise in psychiatric epidemiology to ongoing research activities at the unit, both conceptually and methodologically. An important task is to further develop ongoing studies and supervise doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. The employment involves establishing new external collaborations, applying for international and national grants as main applicant, and contributing to larger applications within the unit. The employment is 20% on a permanent basis.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Principal Researcher, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise. The applicant must also be a Research Leader and have established their own line of research. The applicant should furthermore have shown documented, high-quality scientific production, particularly in the last six years and have the potential to energetically drive their research forward as well as be recognized nationally and internationally. The applicant should also have obtained good, long-term and preferably external funding and have the potential to obtain further external funding. The applicant should have shown teaching and supervision experience and demonstrated good leadership qualities.

Assessment criteria

This position has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

We put particular emphasis on research quality and future potential of conducting cutting-edge research in psychiatric epidemiology. Clinical expertise is meritorious and will be considered when applicable.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
