Consent Preferences Professor of Cultural History – Scholar Idea

Utrecht University is searching for candidates for a professorship of Cultural History per 1 September 2022. The Chair is part of the section of Cultural History of the Department of History and Art History. Cultural History in Utrecht is practiced in the broadest possible sense – thematically, geographically, and chronologically (covering the period from early modern to modern). Research and teaching related to digital history, history of knowledge (including the history of knowledge institutions), heritage studies and public history, and the integration of social and cultural history. The Chair of Cultural History will make a significant contribution to the study of one or more of these fields and will participate in Utrecht University’s strategic theme Institutions for Open Societies and/or other interdisciplinary research hubs, such as the Descartes Centre for the History and Philosophy of Science and the Humanities.

The Chair of Cultural History:

  • initiates and stimulates research within the Cultural History section and the strategic research theme Institutions for Open Societies and/or other University-wide research hubs;
  • develops new externally funded research projects;
  • contributes to and supervises teaching at all levels and the curriculum development relevant to Cultural History within the School of History and Art History;
  • contributes to the visibility of the field of study within the Faculty of Humanities, the Dutch academic world and beyond, and initiates and participates in public engagement activities;
  • has a shared responsibility for managing the Cultural History section and is eligible for other organisational tasks within the department of History and Art History, the Faculty of Humanities and Utrecht University.

Qualifications

The successful candidate:

  • holds a PhD degree in History or a related relevant field;
  • has a wide-ranging expertise in the area of cultural history;
  • is a team player with strong connective communication and organisational skills as well as leadership experience;
  • has excellent research qualifications, evident from leading international publications and experience in supervision and mentorship of junior Researchers;
  • has a track record of (awarded and/or failed) applications for grants and research subsidies from diverse external funding agencies and clear future ambitions, outlined in the research plan;
  • has a proven ability to function in an interdisciplinary and international context;
  • is a motivated teacher, with demonstrable didactic skills and experience in course and curriculum development relevant to the teaching programme of the Cultural History section;
  • has contacts within and beyond the academic world, and experience in developing and disseminating research results in cooperation with social partners;
  • has experience with administrative tasks, and exemplifies a collaborative and supportive leadership style;
  • is able and willing to teach both in Dutch and in English. We expect candidates who do not speak Dutch to master the Dutch language within two years. The department facilitates the acquisition of Dutch language skills.

Offer

We offer a 1.0 FTE tenured position in an inspiring and lively academic environment, with enthusiastic and committed colleagues and excellent facilities in Utrecht’s historic centre. The appointment as professor is initially for five years. After positive evaluation, the appointment will be turned into a permanent one. The gross salary – depending on previous qualifications and experience  – ranges between €5,843 and €8,508 (scale H2 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
