As an Anaesthesia Specialist, you will contribute to clinical activities in the field of anaesthesiology and intensive care of companion animals and horses and related clinical teaching. You will also be able to participate in various research programmes of the department as appropriate/desired.
Qualifications
As our new colleague you:
- have a DVM degree external linkrecognized by the Dutch Bureau for Veterinary registrations;
- preferably are board-certified (ACVAA or ECVAA) as a Specialist in veterinary anaesthesiology, or have completed a residency in anaesthesiology;
- have clear affinity and demonstrable extensive experience in the field of clinical anaesthesia of companion animals and horses;
- are flexible, pro-active and a team player, and you perform well, even under pressure;
- are willing to perform on-call duty in an out-of hours-rota (1 in 5).
Offer
We offer a temporary position (1.0 FTE), initially for a period of one year. The gross salary – depending on previous qualifications and experience – ranges between €3,746 and €5,826 (scale 11/12 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. The Department Clinical Sciences external link(DCS) is part of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine external linkand includes a training institute, research institute and a fully equipped academic veterinary teaching hospital, the ‘Universiteitskliniek Utrecht’. The staff are dedicated to providing excellence in patient care and are responsible for daily clinical supervision and teaching for veterinary students during their Master’s rotations. Tenured staff combines an active role in patient care and (pre-)clinical teaching with involvement in research projects that are embedded in one of the focus themes (including locomotion, regenerative medicine, oncology and genetics).
The university clinic boasts a large fully equipped small animal hospital with six ORs, an ECVECC run ICU and medium care unit, and busy medical and surgical services (including orthopaedics, neurology, cardiology, dentistry, oncology, but also behavioural consultations, dermatology and ophthalmology). Immediately neighboring the small animal clinic, the university complex also comprises a busy equine hospital with more than 100 box stalls, an OR suite with four ORs including a dedicated OR for standing procedures, a 24/7 neonatal foal ICU (in season) and a 24/7 emergency referral clinic as well as an ambulatory equine service.
The Diagnostic Imaging Department supports both equine and small animal clinics, and this department alone sees over 2,000 patients requiring sedation or anaesthesia annually. This department also boasts a 1.5T MRI and 64-slice CT scanner, scintigraphy, state-of-the-art digital x-ray and ultrasonography, as well as an angiography suite for interventional cardiology procedures. Annually in the small animal hospital alone approximately 13,000 outpatient consultations take place and over 3,500 anaesthetics are performed. The equine hospital performs approximately 400 elective procedures, 80-100 exploratory laparotomies, and 100 standing CTs annually, with patients from within the Netherlands and abroad.
The hospital’s anesthesiology team supports both the small animal and equine clinics and performs all sedations and general anaesthetics needed for diagnostic imaging and surgical procedures as well as radiotherapy, giving staff the opportunity to truly work across the breadth of their specialty. The team consists of two European specialists in anaesthesiology (Dip. ECVAA), one board-eligible anaesthetist, two ECVAA residents, four anaesthesia interns who only work in the small animal clinics, and three equine interns. In addition, we have two part-time veterinary anaesthetists as well as three dedicated anaesthesia nurses and three anaesthesia technicians complementing the small animal anaesthesia service.
