The Trondheim Academy of Fine Art is a department within the Faculty for Architecture and Design at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). It is organized as a flexible and experimental educational and research institution. The Department has 22 staff members including five PhD-candidates, and about 80 students in our bachelor and master programs.
The Trondheim Academy of Fine Art is seeking an artist with outstanding artistic practice on international level, and a distinct teaching experience based on a coherent approach to art education.

Responsibilities
The main responsibilities of the position are teaching, artistic research, and artistic development within the expanded field of material and three-dimensional artworks and sculptural processes, with an emphasis on material and spatial practices in contemporary art.
The position requires a serious commitment to explore the potentials of an art academy embedded within a University for Science and Technology. Applicants are expected to show genuine enthusiasm for the opportunity to relocate the centre of their professional activities to the premises of the art academy in Trondheim. Doing so will enable successful candidates to share the processes and outcomes of their artistic research and production with the University, its local contexts, and its broader national and international networks.
The position involves specific responsibilities for advancing and articulating the Department’s study programs and research capacities. The (Associate) Professor will be responsible for individual tutoring and teaching courses in the Bachelor and the International Master program in Fine Art, as well as supervising fellows in a PhD program in artistic research. These study programs are designed to educate artists in ways that develop and enrich their individual studio practice with cross-disciplinary investigations that engage a wide range of forms and fields of knowledge. This requires, among other things, both a broad overview of learning methods and outcomes as well as a critical individual approach to pedagogical formats, from the traditional to the speculative.
Candidates should seek to demonstrate that they can develop and carry out advanced and collaborative artistic research projects, including collaboration with other academic contexts across the arts, science, and technology.
Required qualifications
The successful applicant must be able to document extensive artistic qualifications in important aspects of the subject area and on highest international level. In the assessment, the applicant’s exhibition activities and creative ability as an artist will be emphasized as well as his or her understanding of current trends and developments within the Nordic and international contemporary art world.
Applicants should have achieved either Professor or Associate Professor status. If an applicant lacks the formal qualifications, an external expert committee will consider potential equivalent achievements.
Professor:
You must have the qualifications required for the position of professor in the field of of Material and spatial practices, as outlined in § 1-2 of the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts
The position of Professor requires comprehensive artistic activities at the highest level in accordance with the international standard, as well as commensurate depth and breadth of knowledge in the visual art.
In addition to formal university-level qualifications, the candidate must also document
- development in teaching, advising, and supervising students over time
- extensive experience with supervision preferably at the master / PhD level
- active involvement in quality-assurance processes from the level of individual courses to study program level, as well as in implementing improved working environments
Associate professor:
You must have the qualifications required for the position of associate professor in the field of of Material and spatial practices, as outlined in the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts
The position of Associate Professor requires a completed and approved scholarship / PhD program for artistic research in the relevant subject area, documented significant artistic activity; and/or, artistic research at a high international level. In all cases, the applicant must demonstrate a clear focus relevant to the visual arts.
Besides practical skills, knowledge, and critical understanding of relevant technologies in the field, the position requires interest in and experience with innovative teaching methods, initiating cross-disciplinary projects, institutional networks, and artistic development work. Deeper insight into contemporary art theory is required.

Applicable to all:
You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.
A solid command of both written and spoken English is a prerequisite. It is also a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.
Preferred qualifications
The position will be expected to deliver the highest-quality teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including supervision of master’s and doctoral candidates. In addition to a clear vision of the role of contemporary art in rapidly changing societies, successful applicants will outline a teaching philosophy that elaborates on traditions of studio-based arts educations. Special care should be taken to demonstrate and articulate experience with innovative teaching methods, including showing how these methods have engaged with new challenges across the domains of digital performance and visual intervention (e.g., technical and/or cross-disciplinary collaborations, participatory strategies, quasi-virtual architectures, etc.).
Qualifications that will be considered include:
- experience and advanced understanding of artistic research processes
- well-grounded, up-to-date competence and outstanding artistic practice, including a strong record of exhibition activities in contemporary art venues in internationally relevant arenas
- the ability and willingness to explore the potentials of collaboration across art, technology, and society
- practical skills, knowledge, and critical understanding of relevant technologies in the fields at stake (e.g., AI, big data, advanced visualization, aural interfaces, etc.)
- understanding of the contemporary art world, its current dynamics, and future perspectives
- hands-on experience in leadership and/or management
- relevant capacities for contributing to strategic development on the levels of the Department, the Faculty, and the University

The evaluation will be based on documented material related to teaching, including qualifications in educational theory and practice, form of presentation for the artistic works, experience in supervision of research fellows and second-degree subjects, supervision, and teaching in relation to second-degree theses, as well as other types of pedagogical background. Salary and conditions
The gross salary for the position of 1013 Professor is normally from NOK 637.900 to NOK 948.900 per year, and the gross salary for the position of 1011 Associate Professor is normally from NOK 594.300 to NOK 734.400 per year for a 100% position, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in work.
The person appointed must live in or relocate to Trondheim.
