At the Department of Meteorology (MISU) at Stockholm University we conduct research and education in an international environment within four main areas: Atmospheric physics, Dynamic meteorology, Physical oceanography and Chemical meteorology. In all these areas there is a strong focus on the climate and on processes important for the climate and its development. The department includes some 75 individuals, of which about 35 are teachers and scientists, 25 PhD students and 15 administrative and technical staff.

The department is part of the Bolin Centre for Climate Research that, together with other departments at the university covers research of most of the important aspects of the climate system and the Swedish e-Science Research Centre (SeRC), where we together with KTH and other universities develop e-Science tools and infrastructure to promote scientific breakthroughs in climate science.

Project description
The researcher position will be associated with the EU Horizon 2020 project Next Generation Earth Modeling Systems (NextGEMS) which aims to develop and apply global cloud and ocean eddy resolving climate models. By actually resolving key feedback processes in the climate system at the kilometer scale, as opposed to the current state-of-the-art models, the next-generation models represent a step change in our ability to study cloud and aerosols in the climate system. The models will be run on European supercomputing facilities. The researcher will be actively involved in the collaborative development of the models, including testing and evaluation of key features, and in applying the models to problems related to clouds, aerosols and climate, such as estimating aerosol forcing, cloud feedbacks, pattern effects and climate sensitivity. The model development and application phases will both entail project-wide hackathons, that also include stake holder involvement.

The project has funding for three years employment.

Main responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to develop, implement and utilize the new models, and work in close collaboration with other NextGEMS partners, and will primarily be responsible for aerosol studies.

Qualification requirements
Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. The assessment is based on previous research experience within the general area of the announced position. Doctoral candidates may apply for the position if they expect to receive the PhD degree before the starting date of the position. Attention will also be given to the ability to work independently and as part of a group.
