Consent Preferences PhD in neuroscience of early vision – Scholar Idea

The Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel (IOB) is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join the Quantitative Visual Physiology Group of Prof. Felix Franke in the study of early vision and retinal circuits.

IOB is a research institute associated with the University of Basel which combines basic and clinical research. Its mission is to drive innovations in understanding vision and its diseases and develop new therapies for vision loss. It is a place where your expertise will be valued, your abilities challenged, and your knowledge expanded.

As successful candidate you will lead and contribute to projects investigating the processing of light stimuli by the retinal circuitry and the integration of retinal information by subcortical nuclei.

You will have access to a highly inclusive and interdisciplinary research environment, and to cutting-edge technologies, methods and tools for the observation and recording of neuronal populations in both in vivo (awake, behaving, head-fixed mice) and ex vivo (mouse, monkey, human retinal explants) preparations. You will analyze data from extracellular neural recordings, eye tracking, Calcium imaging, functional ultrasound imaging, and will build models of neural circuits.

Your position

  • Learn to perform extracellular recordings of retinal ganglion cells in retinal explants using high-density microelectrode arrays and recordings of subcortical neurons in head-fixed mice;
  • Analyze neural recordings using Matlab and/or Python;
  • Lead / contribute to submissions to major conferences / journals and progress reports.

Your profile

  • Master degree in biophysics, electrical, computer, biomedical engineering, computer science, neuroscience, computational neuroscience, or another relevant field of study;
  • Strong mathematical and programming skills (e.g., Matlab, Python, C++);
  • Previous experience in applied statistics and/or signal processing is of advantage;
  • Good oral and writing communication skills in English.

We offer you

  • Highly competitive conditions in a dynamic and international research community in Basel;
  • IOB is an equal-opportunity employer with family-friendly work policies.
