The Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE) brings together expertise from the humanities, linguistics, cognitive sciences, social and educational sciences. People from across 20 disciplines are working within the Faculty. Along with the disciplinary approach a very ambitious interdisciplinary research culture has been developed.

The faculty’s research and teaching focuses on social, economic, political and educational issues with the common goal of contributing to an inclusive, open and resourceful society. The FHSE offers four Bachelor and 15 Master degrees and a doctoral school providing students with the necessary knowledge and high-qualified skills to succeed in their future career.

The Culture & Computation Lab is a new transversal data science lab at the Department of Humanites that integrates data-driven and scholarly approaches to the analysis of human culture and its manifold transformations through digital technology. The lab offers technical infastructure and development as well as data science trainings to the students and scholars of the department, with a special focus on humanities research. In doing so, the lab also serves as a thematic figurehead for the crucial contribution of scholarly research to methods, models and applications in data science.

Your Role…

The Culture & Computation Lab is looking to hire a postdoctoral researcher in Cultural Data Science. The postdoc will be a member of the Department of Humanities and help with setting up the new lab in the department, with special regard to the development of technical infrastructure and development workflows. They will also be involved in the implementation of a training program for Cultural Data Science in the context of the FHSE doctoral school. Additionally, the postdoc will have the opportunity to develop their personal research project in the context of the lab.

What we expect from you…

The candidate we are looking for should have a background in data science and an interest in humanities research. We seek a highly motivated candidate with the following profile:

  • PhD in data science, computer science or related disciplines;
  • Experience in working with different cultural data and media;
  • Experience with computational tools and methods for data science, including
    • common programming languages (such as Python, r and SQL);
    • technical infrastructure and development (e.g., server management and data repositories);
    • current data science applications (such as machine learning, data analytics and visualization);
  • A thematic background or interest in Natural Language Processing will be a plus;
  • Openness to work in a department of mixed experience in data science, and to pass on technical expertise to scholars;
  • Teaching experience on Bachelor and Master level;
  • A strong commitment to interdisciplinarity;
  • Ability to work in a multilingual environment.

Languages

The University of Luxembourg is located in a multilingual context. The Department of Humanities has four working languages (English, French, German, Luxembourgish). The person hired on this position must therefore be proficient in English and either French or German.
