PhD Student in Fluid Mechanics, At Luleå University of Technology, be part of an exciting and stimulating environment comprising researchers
Ref 1080-2022
Luleå University of Technology experiences rapid growth with world-leading expertise within several research domains. We shape the future through innovative education and groundbreaking research results and drawing on our location in the Arctic region, we create global societal benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are carried out in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has an annual turnover of SEK 1.8 billion. Today, we have 1,770 staff and 17,200 students.
In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future.
Do you want to contribute to the green industrial transformation for a sustainable society? Take the chance to become part of the Division of Fluid and Experimental Mechanics at the Department of Engineering Science and Mathematics.
We conduct research in close collaboration with companies and industries and are looking for you who want to investigate the possibility of replacing fossil fuels with hydrogen. The project is carried out in close collaboration with LKAB and focuses on the flame in the rotary kiln, which is an important part of the refining process where iron ore is upgraded to pellets for further transport to steel mills.
At Luleå University of Technology, you will be part of an exciting and stimulating environment comprising researchers, other PhD students, strong professional support, and very good equipment. Here you will find knowledge of and access to numerical tools and advanced experimental methods.
Subject description
Fluid Mechanics includes flow in porous materials, multiphase flow and rheology linked to industrial manufacturing methods, flow optimization and flow design for energy technology applications, and magnetohydrodynamics.
Project description
Eliminating the use of fossil fuels in the pelletizing plant is necessary to achieve a sustainable iron value chain based on Swedish ore. An important step in the near future is to replace coal and oil in LKAB’s current processing plants. Hydrogen is a likely fuel alternative as it can be produced on-site using electrolysis without carbon dioxide emissions. In a hydrogen flame, the flame properties are dictated by the mixing of fuel and oxygen and, to create a long flame, high inlet velocities must be combined with slow mixing. This PhD project aims to develop techniques to fluid mechanically control the gaseous flame properties through a so-called co-jet burner.
Duties
A PhD student position involves both theoretical and practical work. In parallel with the research project, you will study courses as part of your PhD education. In addition, you may have the opportunity to try out the teaching role. You will present your research results in scientific articles and at national and international conferences.
More specifically, you will investigate the flow field in the rotary kiln numerically and experimentally in downscaled models. Special focus is on jets and how they interact and mix. You will perform computer-aided flow calculations (CFD) and measure flow fields using optical methods. A key part of the project is to validate model assumptions and build trust in your results.
We believe that you have the ambition and willingness to learn new things and the ability to take initiative to drive the project forward. You should be able to work in a team as well as independently and be interested in doing experiments and numerical simulations as well as conducting development work. Through the project, you will have good opportunities to build a network in both industry and academia worldwide.
Qualifications
Applicants must have at least 300 credits in engineering physics, mechanical engineering, space engineering, energy engineering, or equivalent. 60 credits must be at an advanced level, with several courses related to fluid mechanics. Applicants should also have good speaking and writing skills in English. Knowledge of numerical simulations (CFD) and optical measurement methods in fluid mechanics is meritorious.
