There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position at the Department of Social Anthropology. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years.

The postdoctoral research fellow position is part of a project titled, “Tackling Precarious and Informal Work in the Nordic countries (PrecaNord)”. The project, which begins 1st of August 2022 and ends in 2026, is funded by Svenska Litteratursällskapet i Finland. The working environment for this position will be the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Bergen. The successful candidate is expected to be based in Bergen during the project period (except for fieldwork-periods).

About the project:

PrecaNord will examine precarious and informal work in the Nordic countries. The future of the Nordic social model depends on the availability of secure employment. The model is challenged by changes in labour markets. PrecaNord asks how and in which ways is precarious and informal work a challenge for the Nordic model? In focus is research on how workers experience informal work, its consequences to workers livelihoods and to their sense of belonging, and trust in society. The postdoctoral fellow appointed at the University of Bergen will focus on the situation in Norway, while two other postdoctoral fellows will do similar work in Sweden and Finland. To get a comprehensive view of the phenomenon and to understand how gender, age, nationality, ethnicity, and migrancy intersect in the field, the project focus on 1) construction work; 2) cleaning work (of both homes and offices); and 3) low-skilled platform work (food delivery, taxi service, cleaning services).  The postdoctoral fellow will mainly conduct empirical research, including participant observation and semi-structured interviews. Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within social anthropology or other relevant disciplines (e.g., Sociology, Geography) or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • Experience from qualitative methods.
  • Work independently and in a structured manner, as well as have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English.
  • A good command of the Norwegian or any Scandinavian language is an advantage.

Potential candidates may be invited to the department for an interview and might be asked to hold a trial lecture in a given topic.

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

 The fixed-term period for this position is 3 years. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

A research proposal of 4-5 pages must accompany the application. The proposal should contain a progress plan for the different parts of the research work, as well as a plan regarding publishing.  It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment. A budget must be set up for operating expenses.
