3-4 PhD Fellowships in Law available at the Faculty of Law.
The Faculty of Law at the University of Oslo is the largest legal academic research community in Norway. The objective of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The candidate must be qualified for admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Law. The fellowship period is preferably for 4 years, with 25 % compulsory teaching duties. This presupposes that the fellow is able to conduct teaching in subjects where there is a need for more teaching resources at the Faculty. Alternatively, the candidate may apply for a 3-year fellowship without teaching duties.
Qualification requirements and skills
- Applicants must hold a 5 year Norwegian master’s degree in law or the equivalent at the time of application.
- Applicants should normally have grades that place them among the top 10-15 percent of graduates. This requirement also applies to the master’s thesis.
- Applicants should have excellent written and oral language skills in Norwegian (or other Scandinavian language), and solid language skills in English.
- Applicants must be able to work in an independent and structured manner.
- Good collaboration skills are required as well as the ability and willingness to contribute to development of legal research and the research environment.
Assessment
Applicants must submit a project description of 5-10 pages, which gives an account of the research project, its contribution and relevance to legal science, choice of theory and scientific methodology, possible scientific ethical challenges, and a work plan for completion.
PhD-projects that relate to key legal subjects will be prioritized. Key legal subjects are here defined as subjects included in the Faculty’s five year master’s programme in law. Furthermore, emphasis will be placed on the societal and legal relevance and significance of the project. The project may deal with Norwegian law, international law with relevance to Norwegian law or comparative law where Norwegian law is included in the comparison.
In the evaluation of candidates, emphasis will be placed on the quality of the research proposal, grades, any previous publications, and the applicant’s professional and personal qualifications. In addition, emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s ability to contribute to the teaching of key legal subjects at the Faculty. The candidate is expected to complete the project by the end of the fellowship period. The Faculty prefers that successful applicants are able to start as soon as possible, and normally directly after the notice period has expired.

- Curriculum vitae with complete documentation of education, professional work experience, and academic work
- Certified copies of certificates, diplomas with all grades, and a complete list of publications. Non-Norwegian diplomas (Master, Bachelor, and the like) must be provided in the original language as well as in an English or Scandinavian translation. Non-Norwegian certificates and diplomas must be accompanied by official documentation that explains the grading system, which makes it possible to assess whether the applicants meet the requirements pertaining to grades.
- Up to 3 scholarly publications. If the publications are written by more than one author, a declaration of authorship that explain the applicant’s contribution to the publication must be submitted.
- A list of references (2-3 references that include names, relation to the applicant, and contact details).
