Professor in political science with focus on governance of natural resources, in complex interplay between ecosystems and society
The Faculty establishs a new research area and are recruiting a professor in political science with focus on governance of natural resources. Political science includes studies of the content of politics, political processes and the institutional rules that surround them. The professor will strengthen and renew social science research and education on governance of natural resources, especially in relation to policy and policy implementation. In the autumn of 2021, SLU started a new bachelor program, Politices candidate – sustainable development, where teaching in political science will be an important part.
This fully funded professor position will be placed at the Department of Urban and Rural Development (www.slu.se/en/sol). The department’s research and education is based on the subjects Environmental Communication, Rural Development, Landscape Architecture and Agrarian History and will now be further developed with Political Science as a subject.
SLU Swedish Biodiversity Centre, (CBM), which is a centre for the production and dissemination of knowledge about the complex interplay between biodiversity and societal development, is placed at the Department of Urban and Rural Development. CBM’s activities focus on the interplay between biodiversity and human activities. The task of the centre is to initiate, conduct and coordinate socially relevant research, investigation and information with the goal to conserve, restore and sustainably use biodiversity. Subject area
The subject includes political science with focus on governance of natural resources. The starting point of the subject lies in the complex interplay between ecosystems and society, as well as related societal conflicts of goals and interests.
Duties
The professor is expected to lead a research group, which includes administrative duties.
The candidate, should, within the subject area
- develop and lead a strong research environment with internationally recognized and successful research
- develop research and teaching in close collaboration with other researchers and teachers at the faculty and university
- address research issues with multi- and interdisciplinary approaches
- apply for external research funding at national and international level
- contribute to the development of CBM
- lead, develop and participate in education at basic and advance level
- participate in PhD training and supervising PhD students
- develop and maintain national and international networks and collaborations with academia, and relevant agencies, organizations, the industry and stakeholders
- support the strategic development of the department and faculty
- collaborate with others within the department and at other departments within and outside SLU
- actively collaborate with other research groups within SLU in order to strengthen interdisciplinary research at the university
- disseminate research findings and contribute with relevant knowledge to society/the public
- be able to communicate in Swedish within four years.
Qalifications
The successful candidate shall
- have a PhD and competence as associate professor (docent) or equivalent academic qualifications
- be scientifically skilled within the subject area of this appointment
- have experience of collaboration with stakeholders
- have demonstrated a proven ability to lead and develop a successful research group
- have a proven ability to obtain external research funding in competition
- be pedagogically skilled
- have ability to integrate research and scientific perspectives in teaching
- good ability to communicate in written and spoken English.
Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria for appointment for this position will primarily be based on the degree of skills to which the applicant have in the subject.
The assessment of scientific skills will consider the ability to
- initiate, lead and deliver innovative and excellent research
- independently initiate and pursue outstanding research
- obtain external research funding in competition.
The assessment of pedagogic skills will consider the ability to
- convey and implement his/her pedagogic vision
- plan, conduct and evaluate teaching and research
- supervise and examinate doctoral students.
The assessment of collaboration skills will consider the ability to integrate and cooperate with relevant stakeholders and society.
It is a merit to have conducted multi- or interdisciplinary research and / or research in transdisciplinary collaborations. It is also a merit to have worked with the governance of biodiversity.
Assessment of pedagogic and scientific skills shall be given equal consideration.
Emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s personal suitability and abilities.
