Doctoral student in IoT and AI for monitoring of bridges focus on degradation modelling of bridge structures and their service life.

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Structural Engineering and Bridges

Most civil engineering structures are afflicted with time dependent degradation due to environmental conditions and repetitive loading. Predictions of their real physical condition are difficult and associated with considerable uncertainties. In-service monitoring by wireless IoT sensors can help reducing uncertainties and provide reliable support for decisions on maintenance actions.

The PhD project will focus on degradation modelling of bridge structures and the prediction of their service life. This typically involve complex modelling of material properties and behaviour. The research will be aimed at establishing data driven models that can be updated with information from, e.g., inspections, testing, and expert knowledge. The project will combine physics knowledge of structures with machine learning knowledge, aiming at exploiting recent breakthrough in machine learning (ML).

The candidate will be employed at the division of Structural Engineering and Bridges. The project is a cooperation with the division of Network and Systems Engineering.

Supervision: John Leander is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission

What we offer
