PhD on Nitrous Oxide Dynamics in Coastal Marine Waters with experience in the analysis of environmental samples, and biogeochemical processes

The Department of Biology at the University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a three-year PhD study in biogeochemistry and microbial ecology. Possible start on 1 September 2022. Application deadline: 1 July 2022.

The position is associated with a project investigating the dynamics of nitrous oxide (N2O) in Danish coastal waters. Marine systems are an important source of atmospheric N2O with particularly high emissions of this strong greenhouse gas indicated from oxygen-depleted waters. Yet, the microbial mechanisms and dynamics underlying these emissions are poorly understood. With the aim of delivering the first estimate of Danish marine N2O emissions and establishing a framework for predicting how emissions respond to environmental change, the project will analyze distributions of N2O, elucidate N2O production processes, and identify the key microbes involved in coastal waters subject to seasonal oxygen depletion.

Main research objectives for this position include experimental quantification of microbial N2O production and consumption using 15N stable isotope tracing and mass spectrometry, as well as identification of key microbes involved through biomolecular analyses.

Hence, we seek a candidate with a background in biology, biogeochemistry, microbial ecology, or related fields, with experience in the analysis of environmental samples, insight into biogeochemical processes, and with an aptitude for field work. The selected candidate will work closely together with the project team as well as other colleagues at the Department of Biology, and will have the opportunity to visit project partners at the universities of Gothenburg, Sweden, and Montana State, USA.
