Postdoctoral position in molecular evolution in The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology focus on areas of cell and molecular biology

Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 54,000 students, more than 7,500 employees and a turnover of around SEK 8 billion.

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is organized into seven research programmes which all focus on different areas of cell and molecular biology: Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Microbiology and Immunology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Evolution, Molecular Systems Biology and Structural Biology. The scientific basis of what we do lies in biology, but our research overlaps with other areas such as medicine, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, engineering sciences and physics. In total, we are over 200 staff and ~60 Ph.D. students. Please read more about the department’s work at https://icm.uu.se.

The position is available in the research group of Siv Andersson (https://www.icm.uu.se/molekylar-evolution/andersson-siv/) at the program of Molecular Evolution.

Project description
The research in Siv Andersson´s group aims to provide a deeper understanding of the forces and mechanisms that drive the evolution of bacterial genomes. The goal of this project is to analyse genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic data from Lactobacillus bacteria isolated from the honeycrop of honeybees and use the data to learn more about their metabolic and regulatory systems. Bioinformatic studies of the metabolic and regulatory systems in Planctomycetes, which are bacteria but contain elaborate intracellular membranes, may also be performed to increase our understanding of the transition from simple to more complex cell structures.

Work description
The project includes large-scale bioinformatic analyses of genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic data from bacteria. The development and implementation of bioinformatic tools may also be included in the position.

Requirements
We seek a highly motivated person with a PhD exam in biology with specialization in molecular evolution, bioinformatics, systems biology or related subject areas that the employer considers equivalent. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

The successful candidate should have strong collaborative skills but also be able to work independently. High requirements on research quality and ethics, including quality and reproducibility of data and analyses, are central for all work in the group.

Additional qualifications
Prior experience of bioinformatic studies of microbial genomes is regarded as a merit.

Application:
Your application should contain the following:
1) CV
2) letter of motivation describing research interests, knowledge and why you are interested in this position (max 2 pages)
3) list of publications
4) PhD exam
5) up to three letters of recommendation.
