The Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Social Science invites applications for a PhD scholarships in legal anthropology/ethnographic criminology commencing 1 October 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Introduction

The PhD programme provides PhD students with strong research training which opens up a window of opportunity to a variety of careers within the private and public sectors. The programme includes the drafting of a PhD thesis, active participation in research networks, PhD courses, teaching, and other forms of knowledge dissemination. The PhD programme can be undertaken as a three year full-time study.   

Description of the scientific environment

The position is placed within the Centre for Global Criminology at the Department of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen. The centre is a cross-disciplinary research hub focussed on researching trans-national crime and its global dynamics (https://cgc.ku.dk)

Project description
As part of a larger research project, entitled ‘Illegal Ecologies’, the PhD fellow will focus on the trade and dumping of e-waste in Ghana, illuminating the social dynamics, environmental impact, and legal infrastructures that surround the phenomenon .

Job description

The position is available for a 3-year period, and your key tasks as a PhD student will be to:

  • Actively engage in the research environment at the University of Copenhagen; participate in international conferences, courses and meetings relevant to their research project 
  • Comply with the formal requirements of the ministerial order and the university’s rules https://phd.ku.dk/english/
  • Contribute to teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses in anthropology and/or global development studies
  • Conduct independent and high quality research under the supervision of a Professor Vigh

Formal requirements

  • Applicants should hold an MSc degree in anthropology, criminology or law with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any), relevant work experience, and knowledge of ethnographic methods. Applicants with a non-Danish Master’s degree will have their degree assessed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science in order to establish, if the Master’s degree is equivalent to a Danish Master’s degree. Applicants may submit their application before they have completed their Master’s Degree. However, the Master’s degree must be obtained before the start date.
  • Applicants must have excellent language skills in English and have excellent communications skills. Applicants must be able to teach at an academic level in Danish or English and to follow PhD courses in one of the two languages.

Terms of employment

Successful candidates will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations and the Ministry of Finance concerning the salary of PhD students. If you are offered a PhD position, you will receive a regular monthly salary in accordance with Danish law

The starting salary is currently at app. DKK 27,000 per month, including a PhD supplement, plus app. 17% pension. Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

Recruitment proces

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Interview Committee. Afterwards an assessment committee will be appointed to evaluate the selected applications. The applicants will be notified of the composition of the committee and the final selection of a successful candidate will be made by the Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the assessment committee and the interview committee.

The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant and the above mentioned skills.
