Purdue’s Research Computing department provides access to leading-edge computational and data storage systems as well as expertise in a broad range of high-performance computing activities. To fulfill our mission, we:

  • provide advanced computational resources and services to support Purdue faculty and staff researchers
  • evaluate, deploy, and support hardware and software for large-scale scientific computing
  • promote the effective use of our research computing systems and application software through training and education, consultation, and documentation
  • contribute to the discovery process through algorithm design and development of effective computing techniques

As the HPC Instruction Specialist, you will serve as the course coordinator for training and workshops delivered to faculty and graduate research assistants in HPC, Data Management, and computational programming fundamentals. You will be responsible for working closely with Faculty and Computational Scientists to design educational materials and curricula that introduce, reinforce, and explain HPC, Data Management, and computational programming fundamentals. You will research current trends and in collaboration with Faculty and Computational Scientists, incorporate findings into the development of curriculum goals and pedagogical methods. In this position you will work with domain specific departments to develop for credit HPC courses and plans of study. Consult with faculty and staff to ensure the accessibility of course materials for students with disabilities. You will assess and evaluate course effectiveness, measure student learning outcomes, and make recommendations for continuous improvement. Some workshops will be provided for a national audience via XSEDE.    

What We’re Looking For:

Education and Experience
 

Must have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, CPT, IT, training, instructional design, or related field.
  • Two (2) years of experience that includes:
    • One (1) or more years of direct Linux or HPC experience
    • Experience developing/building course materials 
    • Experience assessing student’s understanding of complex concepts
    • Experience teaching technical and information technology materials
    • Equivalent combination of education and related experience may be accepted

Skills:

  • Understanding of the organization and operation of higher education courses
  • Knowledge and understanding of HPC, Data Management, and computational programming fundamentals and the desire to gain advanced subject matter knowledge
  • Ability to:
    • develop presentations used in training researchers
    • assess curricula and make recommendations for implementation and change
    • conducts training classes/workshops by presenting job-specific, company-specific, and general information on best practices and technical knowledge
    • work with faculty, students, and staff SMEs on HPC, Data Management, and Computational Programing across the University to curate, correlate, compile, and develop educational materials
    • design training materials by identifying and describing learner needs; using desktop publishing; submitting initial versions for review; revising and editing final copy
    • evaluate training by soliciting and analyzing learner feedback
    •  maintain technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing publications, and pursuing professional development opportunities
    • use the content management system to maintain course websites
  • Strong presentation skills, particularly presenting technical information
  • Technical zeal, self-confidence
  • Knowledge of modern learning management systems/course learning management systems and knowledge delivery systems

PREFERRED:  

  • Understanding of software development, computer instructional laboratories, and pedagogical concepts
