Senior Scientist / Postdoc (PhD) (m/f/d) CRISPR-mediated gene therapy in lung disease
The Research Unit Translational Immunology (TUM) and the Institute of Lung Health and Immunity (LHI; Helmholtz Munich) joined forces to better understand and cure lung diseases associated with a dysregulated STAT3 signaling using CRISPR-mediated gene editing. The proposed project focuses on STAT3 gene correction in lung cancer and STAT3-hyper-IgE syndrome (STAT3-HIES), which is a monogenic inborn error of immunity with chronic destructive lung disease. To correct the underlying disease-causing STAT3 mutations we established CRISPR/Cas9-mediated base editing (Eberherr et al. CRISPRJ). PhD position in Forest Biodiversity and Conservation
Within the project “Bavarias new forest reserves: Effects on forest structure and biodiversity” financed by the Bavarian State Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry, we will study how characteristics of forest reserves affect biodiversity of fungi, insects and birds. In particular, we are interested in the effects of reserve size and time since management ceased. The study will cover three major forest types in Bavaria, i.e. mountain forests in the Alps, floodplain forests along the rivers Isar and Danube and colline broadleafed forests in Franconia. Your tasks include site selection (i.e. GIS work and negotiations with local authorities), field work (i.e. setting-up and managing insect traps, coordinating soil samplings), data analyses and writing of scientific publications.

As part of the project, digital methods for decision support and participation in the context of the traffic change in Munich’s district Neuperlach are to be examined and implemented. PhD position (m/f/d) Microbeam Radiation Therapy and FLASH
The Department of Radiation Oncology, headed by Prof. Stephanie E. Combs offers a DFG funded PhD student (m/f/d) Radiation Oncology for the Analysis of the mechanism of Microbeam Radiation Therapy (MRT) and FLASH Therapy with a focus of radio-immune synergies. We are deploying syngeneic lung tumour and glioblastoma models to study the impact of an innovative irradiation therapy, called Microbeam Radiation Therapy (MRT) at a radiation source developed within an Emmy Noether project. This novel, still preclinical approach for cancer treatment uses micrometer sized x-ray treatment fields instead of broadbeam irradiation. The advertised project focuses on unravelling the beneficial effect of MRT on normal tissue while effectively controlling the tumour.

The Chair of Aircraft Design (CAD) is part of the department of aerospace and geodesy at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and treats aircraft systems as a whole in its research. Among others, research is conducted in the fields of operational aspects of aviation as well as aircraft design which is based on numeric simulations and experimental tests. At the CAD noise research focuses on Urban Air Mobility (UAM) applications like air taxis and cargo drones. Relevant activities in this area are noise optimization and noise modeling of aircraft systems. Noise measurement data are acquired during flight tests with an in-house developed noise measurement system. Numeric noise simulations are conducted utilizing a CFD/Ffowcs Williams-Hawking’s based approach. Large simulations run at the HPC environment of the Leibnitz Supercomputing Centre.

PhD position “in vivo imaging of the rodent nervous system”
A PhD position (65% E13) in the area of in vivo imaging of the rodent nervous system is available in the Misgeld lab at TUM’s Institute of Neuronal Cell Biology. The position is available starting earliest 1.9.2022. The project will focus on the in vivo dynamics of neuronal mitochondria, specifically elucidating the mitochondrial “lifecycle” in presynaptic terminals, its local regulation by neuronal activity, and its disruption during neurodegeneration. The work will involve a novel “pulse-chase imaging” approach in neuromuscular junctions, where individual mitochondria will be labelled with photo-switchable tools to track organelle position in situ. The approach will be complemented by other advanced imaging techniques established in the lab, such as correlative light-electron microscopy or two-photon imaging and combined with advanced molecular labeling and profiling tools, genetically-encoded biosensors and injury/disease models in mice. The PhD candidate will have the opportunity to enroll in one of the structured neuroscience graduate programs in Munich.

SARS-CoV2-Abwassermonitoring: Erarbeitung eines Dashboard-Konzepts in ArcGISonline zur unterstützenden Beurteilung des Infektionsgeschehens
SARS-CoV-2 kann als ein Biomarker im Rahmen einer Abwasserdiagnostik genutzt werden, um einerseits eine Änderung im Infektionsgeschehen frühzeitig zu erkennen und andererseits die Dunkelziffer von COVID-19-Fällen auf der Populationsskala besser aufzuklären. Im Rahmen des Projekts „Abwasser Biomarker CoV2“ wurde bereits ein Konzept für ein Abwassermonitoring-Dashboard entwickelt, welches der Öffentlichkeit zur Verfügung gestellt werden soll. Für eine interne Nutzung an der Gesundheitsbehörde sowie den bundesweiten Vergleich soll nun ein ausführliches Dashboard mit entsprechenden Datenstrukturen entwickelt werden. Hierfür suchen wir kurzfristige Verstärkung für unser dynamisches Biomarker Team am Lehrstuhl.
