2 full-time PhD positions in Robust Learning of Sparse Representations

Department:

Faculty of Science and Engineering

Hours:

38

Apply before:

September 30, 2022

The high energy efficiency and generalization abilities in processing sensory information achieved by a mammalian brain are among the gold nuggets of neuromorphic computing. In contrast to conventional super/cluster/grid computing centers which take very large spaces and consume a great deal of energy, a human brain weighs less than 1500g and requires only 20w of power to operate. Emulating these remarkable abilities of the brain represents the pursuit of neuromorphic computing in achieving more with less.

Sparsity is among the key factors that contribute to high energy efficient processing in the brain. Neuroscientists believe that inhibition is a crucial property that results in sparse and thus highly energy efficient representations. Sparsity and inhibition are the focus of this joint project, which consists of two key objectives formulated in two complementary PhD Projects (PPs).

PhD position in TR-ARPES (1.0 FTE)

Department:

Faculty of Science and Engineering

Hours:

38

Apply before:

September 19, 2022

In our group, we study the electronic structures of quantum materials by time- and angel-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning probe microscopy (STM, AFM). Quantum materials, such as graphene and topological insulators, are materials that exhibit quantum properties and emergent phenomena at a macroscopic scale, and often exhibit peculiar electronic band structure. ARPES is a powerful technique that can be used to directly measure the electronic band structure of materials, and time-resolved ARPES (TR-ARPES) can even track changes in the electronic band structure upon excitation of the material with light. Studying the excited band structure of materials is, unfortunately, not trivial, as one has to overcome limitations set by the available time and energy resolution, and minimize the impact of various experimental artefacts. As TR-ARPES offers the best possibility for measurements of quantum materials outside of equilibrium, this PhD project will entail developing a TR-ARPES setup to optimise the achievable the time and energy resolution.

PhD position: Innovative financial instruments for sustainable landscapes

Department:

Faculty of Economics and Business

Hours:

38

Apply before:

September 05, 2022

The need for halting biodiversity loss and maintaining and improving other ecosystem services and landscape quality is broadly felt across the world and this motivates the project: Good intentions in nature and landscape conservation by stakeholders are often hindered by the lack of financial resources. During the last decades, nature conservationists and entrepreneurs have initiated experiments with new financial instruments. In several of these, ‘customers’ pay for ecosystem services (i.e. those cultural, regulating or provisioning services not covered by regular markets). However, the most efficient and effective ways for doing so are unclear, especially since information and transaction costs are high. Combining expertise in sustainable finance, ecosystem services, and nature and landscape valuation, this project engages in a series of experiments with landscape securities as a standardized low-transaction-cost form of financial support, held by both businesses and citizens. The project joins forces with the Northern Netherlands National Parks and NWB Bank and other important stakeholders in a co-production of knowledge approach. The experiments are place based and builds among others on the greenmapper software developed by the University of Groningen (www.greenmapper.org).

The team is also the founder of the Electronic Exchange of Social Security Information (EESSI) project, through which academic software is automated, built, and installed. The software stack can be used by researchers through our HPC cluster, through other HPC clusters, and in their workplaces. Our physical and virtual infrastructure is developed through the DevOps method and is rolled out in an automated manner.

PhD position in Frisian speech technology (1.0 FTE)

Department:

Faculty of Arts

Hours:

38

Apply before:

September 12, 2022

Recent advances of machine learning have led to substantial improvements in speech technology. These advances have mostly been focused on languages with many resources available, such as English. However, there are a gamut of compelling scientific challenges for lesser-resourced languages. In this project, the scope therefore will be on the regional language Frisian, which is spoken in the Northwest of the Netherlands. Specifically: (1) Frisian synthesis: building on existing approaches (e.g., those at Campus Fryslân), investigating techniques to improve the quality of the voice, and/or e.g., develop approaches to make the synthesis reflect the diversity of Frisian varieties, (2) Frisian automatic speech recognition (ASR): building on and improving existing approaches, also allowing for recognition of regional variety in Frisian, and/or (3) investigating the development of a search system for unlabelled acoustic Frisian data. The exact focus depends on the interests and background of the applicant, provided the focus is on speech technology for Frisian.

Post-doc Fundamentals in µ-milling of steel with ultrashort pulse laser 1.0 FTE

Department:

Faculty of Science and Engineering

Hours:

38

Apply before:

September 15, 2022

Topic of research: Fundamentals in ultrafast and ultra-smooth micro-milling of steels with high power ultrashort pulse laser

Ultrashort pulse (USP) laser offers an innovative manufacturing technology that does not require hazardous chemicals. USP laser allows precise and thermal damage-free removal of materials (ablation) for a wide-range of scientific, medical and industrial applications. Precise local energy deposition is one of the main advantages of USP laser that reduce the heat affected zone. These unique properties of ultrashort laser pulses make USP laser ablation a good alternative to other micro-machining processes for ultimate process quality of materials removal. However, its potential is limited by the low ablation rate and the complexity of the associated laser technology. On the other hand, the use of more powerful pulse lasers to increase the ablation rate may result in unwanted effects such as plasma shielding, melting and thermal damage from heat accumulation. Precise micro-milling of steels with ultrashort pulse laser ablation is very challenging but a key enabling technology for many applications. This research project aims understanding the fundamentals in ultrafast and ultra-smooth micro-milling of steel components with USP laser in order to provide in-depth knowledge for industrial applications in smart and precise manufacturing processes.

Several PhD and post-doctoral positions are available in the group of Giovanni Maglia at the University of Groningen in the field of single-molecule protein sequencing and single-molecule enzymology using nanopores. For the Postdoc position ad see: https://www.rug.nl/(…)ils=00347-02S0009H9P

Biological nanopores are an exciting new class of biosensors, which found practical application is in single-molecule DNA sequencing and single-molecule analysis.
We will focus on designing and engineering biological nanopores to recognize either peptides or individual amino acids in proteins. A wide variety of problems will be tackled, which will require designing nanopore, model protein substrates, engineering unfoldases and proteases. The nanopores will be tested using single-molecule electrophysiology techniques.
