Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. The research will be focused on the development and testing of new theories of pathophysiology of neural disorders, network communication and neuromodulation using high-resolution electrophysiological signals in humans. The incumbent will be expected to be involved in all aspects of this research, which includes experimental design, neural data collection with our clinical collaborators at UF Shands Hospital, method development, signal analysis and interpretation, manuscript preparation, and grant development. The research is funded and directed by Professor Matt Farrer in the Department of Neurology. Over the past 20 years, our team has helped define the genetic etiology of neurodegeneration using a combination of population and pedigree-based molecular genetics (high-throughput sequencing, genotyping and Sanger sequencing), bioinformatics (vcf tools, galaxy, python, perl, java) and applied statistics (R archive, Plink, Beagle, linkage software). The overall goal of the LaVoie Lab is to elucidate the earliest molecular events responsible for adult onset neurodegenerative diseases. The Postdoctoral Associate will work in our Integrative Mechanobiology Laboratory (IML) and engage in setting up the patch clamp rig and training graduate students on electrophysiology experimental skills. A successful candidate will work independently and also collaborate with other members to participate in the cutting-edge technology-and-discovery-driven research projects in a highly dynamic and exciting environment. The ideal candidate would have at least 1-2 years of experience in bench (wet lab) experiments focusing on electrophysiology. Skills in LabVIEW programming and development of the optical microscope are a strong plus, but not required. Our Integrative Mechanobiology Laboratory (IML) at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering focuses on inventing new physical tools to probe the biological function and structures.
