Ph.D., Sustainable thermoset based on biogenic material for a facile recyclable green composite system for high-performance applications
The group of Carbon composite researches sustainable, green thermosets for high-performance applications with state-of-the-art novel green thermosets based on biogenic materials. Located at the Chair of Carbon Composites, TUM School of Engineering and Design, Technical University of Munich, we offer a motivating research environment in a multidisciplinary laboratory in one of the highest-ranked universities in Europe. A fundamental transition is required from fossil-based polymers to renewable resources and alter the concept of one-time use to continuously up-cycle, down-cycle or recycle polymeric materials. Most of the plastics that are recycled currently go through mechanical and thermal processing to re-make other plastic products, e.g., thermoplastics such as PE, PP, and PET. Thermosetting plastics and resins cannot be easily chemically or mechanically recycled. The recycling scheme for those structures is always challenging having negative economic and environmental impacts.

Post-Doc (m/w/d) Modellierung zukünftiger Tierhaltungssysteme
Unser Ziel ist es, das Verständnis der Kompromisse zwischen Produktion, Verringerung und Erhaltung in viehbasierten Systemen und innovative Mechanismen zu identifizieren, die das Management dieser Systeme auf Landschaftsebene zu unterstützen. Die wichtigsten von uns verwendeten Modellierungstechniken sind dynamische Systemsimulationen, multi-objektive Optimierung und die Anwendung von Ökobilanzen. Unsere Modellierungsarbeit wird ergänzt durch die Erstellung empirischer Datensätze für ausgewählte Viehhaltungssysteme in Ostafrika und in den Subtropen Latein-Amerikas. Im Rahmen dieses Forschungsprojekts werden die Produktivität von Viehbeständen untersucht, Grasland und die wichtigsten Verbindungen zu biogeochemischen Kreisläufen. Wir führen sowohl empirische und Modellierungsarbeiten im Gran Chaco von Argentinien in Zusammenarbeit mit Forschern des Nationalen Forschungsrats (CONICET) sowie in Kenia und Tansania in Zusammenarbeit mit dem International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) und anderen afrikanischen und europäischen Forschungspartnern.

The aim of the group is to improve the understanding of the trade-offs between production, mitigation and conservation in livestock-based systems, and to identify innovative mechanisms to aid landscape-level management of these systems. The core modelling techniques we use are dynamic system simulations, multi-objective optimisation and the application of life cycle assessment. Our modelling work is complemented with the generation of empirical datasets for selected livestock systems in East Africa, and in the subtropics of Latin-America. This research project will study the productivity of livestock, grasslands and key links to biogeochemical cycles. We conduct both empirical and modelling work in the Gran Chaco of Argentina through collaboration with researchers from the National Research Council (CONICET), and in Kenya and Tanzania in collaboration with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), and other African and European research partners.

The aim of our group is to improve the understanding of the trade-offs between production, mitigation and conservation in livestock-based systems, and to identify innovative mechanisms to aid landscape-level management of these systems. We conduct modelling studies and generate empirical datasets for selected livestock systems in East Africa, and in the subtropics of Latin-America that are under-represented in global studies. This doctoral research project will study productivity grasslands and key links to nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration and and species diversity. The field work will take place in the dry forest ecosystem of the Gran Chaco of Argentina, in collaboration with researchers from CONICET, the Argentinean national research council.

Die Professur für Livestock Systems an der TUM School of Life Sciences in Freising sucht eine/n Doktoranden (m/w/d) in Teilzeit (65%), der sich mit der Wiederherstellung von Grünland beschäftigt. Unser Ziel ist es, das Verständnis der Kompromisse zwischen Produktion, Verringerung und Erhaltung in viehbasierten Systemen und innovative Mechanismen zu identifizieren, die das Management dieser Systeme auf Landschaftsebene zu unterstützen. Im Rahmen dieser Doktorandenstelle sollen empirische Daten zum Verständnis der Funktionsweise von Weidesystemen in Kenia gewonnen werden, bei denen das Vieh zusammen mit großen Säugetieren weidet. Im Rahmen dieses Forschungsprojekts soll untersucht werden, inwieweit die Dauer und Intensität der Beweidung sowie die Manipulation von Pflanzenarten zur Bewertung des Potenzials für die Wiederherstellung von Grasland genutzt werden können. In den Experimenten werden die Auswirkungen der Beweidung auf die Produktivität und die Stabilität von Grasland bewertet, um einen frühen Erfolg der Wiederherstellung zu ermitteln. Diese Arbeit wird in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) und dessen Partnernetz durchgeführt.

PhD position (m/f/d) Tropical grasslands restoration
In our group, we quantify trade-offs between production, mitigation and conservation in livestock systems, and to identify innovative mechanisms for landscape-level management. This doctoral position will generate empirical evidence to understand the functioning of grazing systems in Kenya where livestock graze with large mammals. This research project will examine the potential to use grazing duration and intensity and manipulation of plant species to assess the potential for grassland restoration. The experiments will assess the effects of grazing on productivity and stability of grasslands, aiming to detect early restoration success. This work is conducted in close collaboration with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), and their network of partners.

The Department of Computer Science, Technical University of Munich, has a vacancy for a PhD candidate/researcher position in the area of efficient algorithms. The position is hosted at the Chair of Algorithms and Complexity, headed by Prof. Susanne Albers (http://wwwalbers.in.tum.de/index.html.en).
The position is paid according to the German public salary scale TVL-13 and provides a competitive salary with standard benefits. The initial appointment is for a period of two years and can be renewed for another two years.
The successful candidate should have a Master’s degree in computer science or mathematics. Since the position involves teaching obligations, very good proficiency in German is required. Post Doc in Hydrological Modeling of Alpine Catchments
Job description: This postdoc project focuses on the quantification of climate change impact on groundwater stor-age in high Alpine catchments based on a combined experimental modelling approach (the re-tained model is WaSiM). The work aims at answering the question how the role of groundwater stor-age for high Alpine water resources will evolve under ongoing climate change, based on detailed analyses of the three selected case studies. This will be achieved by further developing existing hy-drological modelling approaches with the main focus of improving the representation of surface wa-ter – ground water exchanges in high alpine environments. Detailed field data will be used to calibrate this model and achieve the best possible representation of the studied system. The developed model will be used to investigate how the relative role of subsurface water storage as compared to above ground water storage in snow and ice will evolve in a warming climate.

The Schirmer lab is part of the ZIEL – Institute for Food & Health at the Technical University of Munich and located in Freising-Weihenstephan. The research of our lab focuses on the human microbiome, especially gut microbes, and investigates potential mechanisms of host-microbial interactions in health and disease. We are particular interested in the role of the microbiome in inflammatory and auto-immune diseases and how hormone-microbiome interactions impact female health. To address these questions, we use integrated multi-omics analyses (metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and metabolomics) combined with the subsequent isolation of the strains in the lab to study these mechanisms.

Ph.D., Sustainable thermoset based on biogenic material for a facile recyclable green composite system for high-performance applications
A fundamental transition is required from fossil-based polymers to renewable resources and alter the concept of one-time use to continuously up-cycle, down-cycle or recycle polymeric materials. Most of the plastics that are recycled currently go through mechanical and thermal processing to re-make other plastic products, e.g., thermoplastics such as PE, PP, and PET. Thermosetting plastics and resins cannot be easily chemically or mechanically recycled. The recycling scheme for those structures is always challenging having negative economic and environmental impacts.

We are looking for a motivated Ph.D. student or post-doc interested in developing novel processes that boost the production of bio-based liquid fuels and other chemicals through electrical energy supplied to electrochemical / electro-biotechnological reactor concepts. Such concepts aim at replacing fossil raw materials in value added chains. The advertised position is part of a large cooperation project with partners from industry and academia. The candidate will measure and model data on the reaction kinetics and mass transfer in reactive chemical systems. A reactor concept is developed with two other research groups at the TUM Campus Straubing who specialize in electrochemical processes. The final goal is to build a demonstrator on the mini-plant scale.

Die Professur für Aerospace Structure Design gehört zur TUM School of Engineering and Design (ED) und zum Department Aerospace and Geodesy. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind aktuelle Technologien und Strukturkonzepte in der Luft- und Raumfahrt im Kontext physikalisch-technischer und wirtschaftlicher Aspekte zu vergleichen, grundlegenden Werkstoffe in der Luft- und Raumfahrt mit ihren Eigenschaften zu benennen, sie zu bewerten und je nach Anforderung auszuwählen und wichtige Bauteile und Konstruktionsprinzipien in der Luft- und Raumfahrt zu unterscheiden und durch Betrachtung und Berechnung zu bewerten. In diesem Umfeld spielt die multidisziplinäre Analyse (co-simulation) und Optimierung (MDO) eine herausragende Rolle, um neue Entwurfsräume und disruptive Designlösungen zu erschließen.

Research Assistant – experimental investigation of the aerodynamic performance of advanced future compressor stages
You will be responsible for the coordination and technical conduction of a 3-year research project, aimed at the experimental investigation of the aerodynamic performance of advanced future compressor stages, sup-ported by numerical modelling and simulations of performance-enhancing design features. In this research project you will be able to experience hands-on testing of a high-speed and engine-representative compressor further increases of the effi-ciency and stability margin. The project is highly innovative, will generate fundamental knowledge about the handling and cap-turing of flow behavior in multistage compressors. The collaborative frame with a prestigious industry partner will give insight to future technology requirements.
