The Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Sciences has the following fulltime vacancy:
principal research fellow in the field of Algebra and Geometry
Position
As a principal research fellow, you will be part of the Academic Assistant Staff (Dutch: Assisterend Academisch Personeel, AAP). You will spend at least 50% of your working time on academic research. In addition, you will actively contribute to education and service activities.
Research
- You will carry out high-quality academic research within the areas of algebra, number theory and algebraic geometry.
- You will will collaborate with the present research teams in algebra and geometry. Research connections with the current members of the team are expected.
- You will report on the results of your research and produce academic publications.
- You will take part in the organisation of research events and activities.
- You will contribute to the development of the research group.
- You will contribute to attracting external research funding.
Education
- You will teach courses on our bachelor and master programmes in mathematics.
- You will teach partially as a main instructor and partially as a teaching assistant.
- You will contribute to the development of teaching material.
- You will supervise students for their bachelor and master theses.
- Your teaching role will evolve along with the study programmes and the needs of the department.
Services
- You will play an active role in the academic and societal service provision of the department.
- You will also be involved in student recruitment and alumni activities.
Profile
- You hold a PhD in Mathematics or equivalent by the time of the start of your appointment.
- You have relevant research expertise in algebra, geometry, and related areas.
- Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
- Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision. Relevant teaching experience in mathematics is an advantage.
- A working proficiency in English is necessary. Proficiency in Dutch is not required, but the department will support and encourage you to learn Dutch.

What we offer
- We offer an appointment as a principal research fellow for a period of three years. Following a positive evaluation, the appointment can be renewed once.
- Your gross monthly salary is calculated according to the pay scale for a principal research fellow (Academic Assistant Staff, AAP). If you work part time, your salary is calculated proportionally on the basis of your employment percentage.
- You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
- The planned start date is 1 February 2024.
- You will do most of your work at Campus Middelheim in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
