The Department of Health Sciences invites applications from qualified candidates for a preliminary appointment (tenure-track) in Health Sciences at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position is expected to start on July 1, 2023; however, the start date is negotiable.

We are looking for outstanding applicants with the capacity to develop an independent, vigorous, and innovative research program in the broad areas of new health technologies research, including advanced therapies and personalized medicine. Appropriate research areas include tissue engineering, biomaterials, biologized medical devices, cell and gene therapies, stem and iPSC cell models, and drug delivery. Knowledge and consideration how these technologies intersect with health technology assessment, privacy, and ethics are an asset.

About the Academic Unit:

The Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc), Ph.D./MSc in Health Sciences, and MSc in Health: Science, Technology, and Policy housed within the Department of Health Sciences offer opportunities in this growth area and strategic importance at Carleton. These interdisciplinary programs leverage the expertise of multiple disciplines, from biomedical to environmental to social determinants of health, health policy, and public and global health, for learning and research opportunities. Qualifications:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in health-related fields, and/or MD or equivalent. The successful candidate must show proven ability or significant potential to develop an independent research program and will be expected to maintain their research program by obtaining external competitive grants (e.g., Tri- council funding). They will also be expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels within their area(s) of specialization and in broader health-related fields. The successful applicant will demonstrate excellent teaching, mentoring, and communication skills. Administrative experience would be an asset, as the candidate will be required to participate in the Department’s administrative work.

As part of an interdisciplinary department, the successful candidate’s research interests are expected to dovetail with the existing Faculty. Therefore, applicants with the ability to forge collaborations with members of the Department and interdisciplinary-oriented Faculty across the university and allied agencies will be given preference. The Department is building core strengths in the following four themes: 1) Health Equity and Promotion, 2) Health Systems and Policy, 3) Chronic Conditions, Prevention, and Treatment, and 4) Lifecycle Approach to Health.

  • a statement of teaching philosophy (one-page maximum), including identifying which courses offered by the Department they would be interested in teaching and describing any new courses they would choose to develop;
  • a statement that identifies your strengths in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in your discipline and on campus as well as your future plans (one page maximum);
  • examples of course outlines, assignments, and evaluation rubrics are an asset;
  • names and contact information for three referees;
