Carleton University’s School of Linguistics and Language Studies (SLaLS) invites applications from qualified candidates for a confirmation-track position with a specialization in American Sign Language at the rank of Instructor, commencing July 1, 2023.
The qualified candidate will teach undergraduate courses per academic year. They will design and implement their own curriculum based on the ASL minor goals. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute fully to the program, including teaching, developing materials, participating in ongoing curriculum updates, and innovating/expanding the program’s offering.

About the Academic Unit
American Sign Language is housed in the Modern Languages unit in the School of Linguistics & Language Studies, which represents a rich diversity of perspectives on language, also offering degree programs in Applied Linguistics & Discourse Studies, as well as courses, minors or certificates in Arabic, Mandarin, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, and Russian, as well as Communication Courses for Disciplines and Professions and English as a Second Language for international students, immigrants, and refugees.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must:
- have a Bachelor’s degree or, in lieu of a degree, commensurate relevant experience may suffice;
- have a demonstrated ASLPI of 4+ or higher;
- have 5 or more years of experience teaching ASL to hearing students;
- have highly developed leadership, organizational, teamwork, and interpersonal skills;
- have a high degree of expertise in teaching ASL linguistics;
- have experience in creating lesson plans and materials;
- have experience in ASL language assessment;
- have experience in using technology (i.e., creating videos, marking videos, teaching online when required)
- have demonstrated teaching excellence
The following are valuable assets:
- SLIC or ASLTA certification (or demonstrate commitment to obtaining one);
- knowledge and experience in, teaching the history of, and sign language of underrepresented Deaf communities;
- a degree/certificate related to ASL education, Deaf Studies, ASL Literature, or language teaching;
- university/college teaching experience;
- experience in ASL translation work or interpreter training;
- examples of evaluations from students.
