Reporting to the Head of Research Support Services (RSS), under the direction of the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities Subject Coordinator, the Arts and Social Sciences Librarian delivers responsive and innovative services in support of students and faculty served by the Carleton University Library.

A member of the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities subject team, the Arts and Social Sciences Librarian provides an array of services to meet the teaching, learning, and research needs of library users from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, including but not limited to, assigned subject areas. The Arts and Social Sciences Librarian is a member of the CUASA bargaining unit.

About the Academic Unit

The MacOdrum Library (https://library.carleton.ca/) promotes excellence at Carleton University by collecting, preserving, and providing access to information resources and services for our teaching, learning, research, and administrative communities, wherever they are located.

The Library consists of a main building at the heart of the campus which holds over 3.7 million items and an on-campus storage facility with a capacity of 800,000 volumes. There are 103 FTE positions in the Library including about 31 Librarians, 68 Professional Services Staff, and about 50 casual student positions. The Library participates in co-operative ventures with area libraries and museums as well as libraries in research institutions across Canada. It is also part of the Ontario Council of University Libraries and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network.

Qualifications

Education: Undergraduate degree plus a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited library school is required. Knowledge of arts and social sciences acquired through university studies or professional experience.

Experience: At least 2 years of experience in arts and social sciences librarianship, preferably in an academic setting. Knowledge of digital information resources and applications and relevant teaching experience related to arts and social sciences with a strong emphasis on client services. Some original research experience and understanding of qualitative research methods as well as knowledge synthesis would be an asset.

Position summary:

A member of the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities subject team, the Arts and Social Sciences Librarian provides an array of services to meet the teaching, learning, and research needs of library users from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, including but not limited to, assigned subject areas. The Arts and Social Sciences Librarian is a member of the CUASA bargaining unit.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

  • Reports to the Head of Research Support Services, under the direction of the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities Subject Coordinator, performs work with a high degree of independence and flexibility within the framework of the team, departmental, library policies, practices, and priorities.
  • Serves as a member of the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities Subject team and collaborates with all members of the team to provide services to meet the teaching, learning and research needs of faculty and students.
  • Works with departmental colleagues and staff in other library departments to provide services to all academic departments supported by the Carleton University Library.
  • Collaborates with members of the Collections & Library Assessment department with respect to collection development in the Arts and Social Sciences.
  • Works collaboratively with functional librarians (e.g., Scholarly Communications, GIS, Teaching & Learning, Copyright and Data Services) to ensure that the needs of faculty and students requiring specialized expertise are understood and met.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works collegially and cooperatively to provide high quality information services to the users of the Carleton University Library.
    • Identifies and promotes relevant collections and resources for research, teaching and learning through various means.
    • Provides consultations for subject or other specialized areas of expertise.
    • Develops and delivers instruction and research seminars using both traditional and active learning methods and innovative educational technologies.
    • Creates a wide range of instructional and learning materials, demonstrating expertise in the use of technology, to improve access to library services and collections.
    • Remains current on trends in information service provision, emerging resources, and pedagogy.
    • Makes evidence-based decisions to support and continuously improve library services.
    • Supports interdisciplinary initiatives.
    • Actively shares knowledge of specialized resources with other team, departmental, and library colleagues.
  • Collaborates with members of the Collections & Assessment department on the development and maintenance of the collection in assigned subject areas.
    • Provides input into the formulation, implementation, and revision of collection policies in assigned subject areas; ensures teaching, learning and research interests of faculty and students are considered.
    • Makes recommendations about the selection of materials for the collection in this subject area.
    • Provides advice in on-going maintenance and deselection of the collection.
    • Provides input on the preparation of Library support statements for academic program assessments and quality assessment documents as required.
    • Maintains current knowledge and awareness of acquisitions and effectively communicates relevant information to faculty and students in the assigned subject areas.
  • Engages with faculty, students, and staff in assigned departments in order to develop strong relationships and meet user needs.
    • Maintains current knowledge and awareness of university programs in teaching, learning and research (current and projected).
    • Communicates effectively on the availability of resources for research and courses, both within and beyond the library collection.
    • Liaises with faculty to develop class assignments and establish appropriate Library research instruction for information literacy and resource use.
    • Speaks knowledgeably about open access, institutional repositories, digital collections, research data management, information literacy and other library departments and services.
    • Maintains knowledge of qualitative research methods as well as knowledge synthesis.
    • Promotes library initiatives and services.
    • Assesses user needs and shares this information with other library staff.
    • Seeks opportunities for collaboration with academic departments and the wider community to support teaching, learning, and research.
  • Engages in professional and academic development, which may include:
    • Participates in activities to maintain or enhance current professional knowledge, skills, and abilities in relation to library and information science, and/or area of specialization.
    • Contributes to librarianship by engaging in research and /or scholarly work.
    • Contributes to the profession through work with associations.
  • Actively participates in committee and project work within the library, and performs other related duties as required in a team-based environment.

  • High level of digital literacy and strong information technology and communications skills.
