Position Overview

Student Wellness Services is currently seeking a Recurring Part-time Registered Nurse.

Student Wellness Services provides integrated and expanded health and wellness services to the University of Calgary community and its surrounding area. The population served includes approximately 40,000 students, staff and external clients. Student Wellness Services provides and supports the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of its clients within a supportive and inter-professionally collaborative clinical model.

This position reports to the Nurse Manager, Wellness Centre and works to provide day-to-day quality health care to students at the University of Calgary. 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Directs patients to examination rooms, maintains an orderly and efficient flow in the clinic
  • Advises patients regarding health concerns, and reinforces self-care directions given to patients by the physicians, as required
  • Reviews medication schedules upon request by the physician, as well as teaching patients the correct use of medical supplies such as, wound care, etc., provides nursing assistance to physicians as required
  • Makes appropriate referrals to other healthcare providers, and books tests as requested by physicians
  • Advises patients as to preparation procedures for various laboratory tests and other investigative procedures
  • Checks vision, height, weight, blood pressure etc. for medical physical examinations
  • Reviews and assesses laboratory reports and informs appropriate persons
  • Responds appropriately to Campus Security and other departments regarding emergency medical situations on campus, oversees the completion of accident reports and forwards them to the Safety Office.
  • Maintains and assesses all medical equipment is in good working condition, and ensures all exam rooms are fully stocked with medical supplies as appropriate. Coordinates the ordering of medical supplies for the clinic by making recommendations to the Director, Wellness Centre
  • Safeguards confidentiality of patient information
  • Triages patients, including mental health concerns
  • Assists in disposing of bio hazardous wastes
  • Participates in health education and promotion on campus
  • Provides consultations and administers immunizations for health science students regarding appropriate vaccines for their individual programs
  • Pssists physicians and psychiatrists with mental health patients regarding appropriate referrals, follow-up appointments and case management within the clinic and also with internal and external campus referrals
  • Assists physicians with mental health emergencies
  • Acts as a liaison between counselling, student outreach access and support and Student Accessibility Services, reviewing patients in a collaborative model
  • Participates in health and mental health initiatives on campus
  • Actively participates as a member of the UHS team
  • Attends UHS staff meetings as required
  • Assists in policy development related to UHS, particularly with the other medical personnel
  • Assists with developing and implementing health education programs for students
  • Works as part of the UHS team
  • Preparation and updating of charts
     

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Registered Psychiatric Nurse with a Bachelor’s Degree and Registered Nurse designation or a Registered Nurse with 4 years recent or current experience in mental health setting
  • Current registration with CARNA or CRPNA
  • Current BLS required
  • Exceptional communication and documentation skills required
  • Excellent assessment skills required
  • The ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage workload and schedule independently is required.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team with clear demonstration of the ability to work well with and be respectful of co-workers and students
  • Critical thinking and the ability to problem solve
  • Previous teaching experience an asset
  • A working knowledge of psychiatric pharmacology is an asset
  • Suicide/violence risk assessment course(s) an asset
  • Previous experience in case management an asset
  • The ability to be flexible and adapt to increased workload or different assignments based on clinic need.
  • Previous experience with a post-secondary student population an asset
  • Must be able to work closely with student support advisors
  • Manage referrals to other health professionals, campus and community resources
  • Consultation with physicians regarding medication review, risk assessment tools (PHQ9 etc.)
  • Must possess a calm, compassionate and reassuring manor
  • Experience with an EMR, preferably QHR/Accuro required
  • Working knowledge of Alberta Health immunization requirements for post-secondary students is required
