We are looking for
Doctoral student in Computer Science at The Faculty of Technology and Society.
Work duties
Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their studies. Those appointed to doctoral studentships may, however, work to a limited extent with educational tasks, research, artistic research and administration, however, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20 per cent of a full-time post (Chapter 5, Section 2 of the Higher Education Ordinance).
We offer a PhD position to a qualified applicant with an interest in computer science, the digitization of society, innovation, sustainability and human-computer interaction. The doctoral project aims to investigate how digital technologies can be used to promote sustainable development by helping people make the “right” choices in different situations. The “right” choice in this project is based on both the total sustainability effect and the perceived user benefit being positive. The direction of the project is relatively open and is defined by the final candidate together with the supervisor. The orientation can be more or less technical, but is basically about how digital solutions can facilitate a transition to a more sustainable society – with the user at the center. It can be about anything from solutions that automatically take care of things for the user to solutions that help and motivate the user in different situations.
The research will likely be conducted with both qualitative and quantitative methods. Studies will be conducted both in lab environments and in natural environments. Research and teaching will be conducted in symbiosis with the master’s program Innovation for Change in a Digital Society (https://mau.se/en/study-education/programme/taics/) and other related environments at the university, such as MAU Game Lab (https://games.mau.se/), Data Society research program (https://mau.se/en/research/prominent-research/research-programmes/data-society/), and IoTaP research centre (https://mau.se/iotap).
The main task for the doctoral student is to be devoted to the doctoral education, which includes carrying out research as well as doctoral education courses. The duties also include participation in teaching and other institutional work (max. 20% of the time), for broadened competence and merit for a future academic career path.
When applying, a research proposal must be attached (1-2 A4 pages) in which the candidate describes his understanding of the research area and shares his ideas for how the area could be addressed. This research proposal then serves as an initial proposal to define and plan the research together with supervisors.
Qualifications
To be admitted to third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet the general and specific entry requirements of the subject in question. Moreover, the applicant must be deemed capable of assimilating the education.
General entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes (HEO Chapter 7 Section 39) have those who:
- has been awarded a second-cycle qualification
- has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or
- has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
Specific entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes have those who:
- have knowledge and skills equivalent to a second-cycle degree in computer science or in another subject that has relevance for computer science, or
- have acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in or outside Sweden
- are proficient in English to the extent required for conducting postgraduate studies in computer science.
Selection criteria
Selection among applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements shall be made with regard to their capacity to assimilate the education (HEO Chapter 7 Section 41).
The following general criteria will be used:
- Subject competence
- Scientific quality in previous work
- Methodological and scientific maturity
- Communication and collaborative skills
The following specific criteria will be used:
- Proficiency in English, both in writing and speaking
- Meritorious to be proficient in Swedish, both in writing and speaking
- Merit with experience in academic research and writing (thesis and/or articles), as well as teaching at university level
- Broad knowledge in the subject area is desirable, preferably with additional knowledge in areas such as the digitization of society, innovation, sustainability, ethics, or human-computer interaction
- The research proposal will be of great importance in the selection of the candidate.
