PhD for DFG Project: Wood- do you like this smell?
The Holzforschung München of the Technische Universität München with the professorships for “Wood Science”, “Wood Technology” and “Fungal Biotechnology in Wood Science” promotes the innovative and sustainable use of wood-based materials and products through research, teaching and development projects. About the project: The objective of the work is to elucidate the influence of wood characteristics and environmental and technological treatment on the chemical composition and properties of wood, here with the focus on the wood odour and VOC emission profiles. To achieve this aim, the overall odour of wood of Cembran pine (Pinus cembra L.) will be evaluated by sensory investigation. Thereby, not only the wood of different varieties and origins but also standard initial types of treatment will be investigated. The elucidation of common wood characterizing parameters, the overall VOC emission profiles together with determination of the main odour-active compounds will generate a deeper understanding of the unique chemistry and smell properties of Cembran pine. The project is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

We address all aspects of sustainability (ecological, economic, and social) and have developed strong expertise in robust multi-objective optimization, quantification and integration of economic risks and uncertainties, and bio-economic modeling of continuous cover forest management. In addition to applications in German forestry, the models we have developed are contributing to finding solutions for land-use problems in other countries in Europe, Africa, and Latin America.

The Chair of Materials Engineering of Additive Manufacturing is looking for a full-time applicant as Wissenschaftliche/n Mitarbeiter/in (m/f/d) Founded in 2019, the new Chair of Materials Engineering of Additive Manufacturing at the Technical University of Munich teaches and researches in the promising field of additive manufacturing of metallic structures. The main focus is developing and characterizing metallic high-performance materials for/through additive technologies using experiments and computer-aided methods. Furthermore, the chair is dedicated to challenging questions in the field of computational material design, especially with the help of CALPHAD-based methods. The gut microbiome plays a fundamental role in health and disease. CRC 1371 (Speaker Prof. Dr. Dirk Haller) focuses on the digestive tract and proposes an interdisciplinary approach to elucidate the functional relevance of microbiome signatures in the context of inflammation and cancer. Within CRC 1371, the Integrated Research Training School (IRTG) provides a qualification program for PhD students containing excellent multidisciplinary training with tailor-made subject-based and soft skills courses, annual retreats, summer school, and a supervision concept. PhD position | Sustainable Energy Materials | Electrochemistry
We test novel catalysts for sustainable energy conversion processes such as polymer electrolyte fuel cells or electrolyzers, H2O2 production, or electrochemical CO2 reduction. To do so, the stability of newly developed catalysts is of pressing concern. You will continue our research line around stability assessment of novel catalysts by electrochemical flow cell measurements that will be coupled to on-line analytics (c.f. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41563-019-0555-5). Specifically, an in-house designed flow cell is coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and the stability against dissolution will be assessed. This will be done with collaboration partners around the world. The workflow spans from analytical chemistry to material science and engineering. There is no need for previous knowledge in the described fields but a strong motivation to learn and push the boundaries of our current knowledge further. We are looking for an individu-al with a high willingness to take initiative and motivation to start her/his career at TUM.
