The research group “Organic Geochemistry” in the Department of Environmental Sciences uses chemical markers buried in lake sediments to investigate interactions between plants, humans and climate throughout the recent geological past.
Starting now, we are looking for an Assistant to support our team. The person we are recruiting will work alongside several PhD students and be involved in different ongoing projects.
Your position
- Working on an SNSF project to explore past algal population dynamics
- Preparation of laboratory equipment
- Support in various wet chemical laboratory work, e.g. lipid extraction from lake sediments, transferring samples, chemical separation of compounds
Your profile
- Student at the University Basel (BA/MA) preferably in the field of environmental sciences, biology or chemistry
- Good knowledge of English
We are looking for a person who can support our group for a longer period of time (at least 12 months). As your work will almost exclusively involve laboratory work, laboratory experience and/or an interest in laboratory work would be an asset. You do not need prior experience with the specific techniques used by our group, as you will receive relevant training for all protocols.
We offer you
You will have the opportunity to gain experience in an organic chemistry laboratory, learn how to work with lipid biomarkers starting from sediment and plant samples, and gain insight into the state-of-the-art paleoecologic and paleoclimate projects of our group. The working hours and workload can be flexibly adapted and vary between months.
