Project background:
This PhD position is part of an ambitious international project aimed at fostering a sustainable forest-based bioeconomy in Germany and Uruguay. The project focuses on the identification and assessment of tree species from the southern hemisphere that could enhance the biodiversity and resilience of forest ecosystems in Central Europe, particularly in light of climate change. Additionally, the project aims to develop innovative forest management strategies and value-added product pathways in both Germany and Uruguay, integrating biodiversity and ecosystem services into forest and agroforest systems. The project is comprised of three sub-projects. This announcement is for the Sub-Project 1: Forestry, Forest Management, and Agroforest Systems. The location of the work will be in Germany and Uruguay.

Die Thermofluiddynamik ist eine herausfordernde Disziplin, der Erwerb bzw. die Vermittlung von Kenntnissen und Fähigkeiten in diesem Gebiet erforderen Aufwand und Engagement von allen Beteiligten. Unsere Lehre orientiert sich an modernen didaktischen Konzepten wie dem inverted class room. Aktives Lernen im Selbststudium mit weitgehend eigenständigem Bearbeiten von Übungsaufgaben wird ergänzt durch Q&A- und peer-instruction Sessions, Kleingruppenübungen, etc. Zur Unterstützung unserer Lehrveranstaltungen zur Technischen Thermodynamik im 3. Semester der B.Sc. Studiengänge Maschinenwesen und Ingenieurwissenschaften suchen wir eine(n) engagierte(n) und begeisterungsfähige(n), wissenschaftliche(n) Mitarbeiter(in) / Doktorand(in)en Im Zentrum unserer Forschungsarbeiten stehen thermo-akustische Verbrennungsinstabilitäten. Diese beeinträchtigen die Sicherheit und Zuverlässigkeit sowohl von Gasturbinen und Raketenmotoren, als auch von Haushalts- oder Industriebrennern. Mit der Einführung von Wasserstoff als Energieträger werden hier mannigfaltige Herausforderungen erwartet, insbesondere im Bereich der Flugantriebe und von GuD Kraftwerken zur Stromerzeugung. Zur Analyse und Beherrschung thermo-akustischer Instabilitäten kombinieren wir in einem interdisziplinären Ansatz Strömungsmechanik, Akustik und Verbrennung mit Methoden der Regelungstechnik, der nichtlinearen Dynamik und der datenbasierten Modellierung („maschinelles Lernen“). Dabei stehen wir im intensiven Austausch mit Kollegen an Forschungseinrichtungen und Industriepartnern in- und außerhalb Europas. Für die zu besetzende Stelle ist noch kein Forschungsthema fix vorgegeben – es sollte jedoch persönlichen Interessen entsprechen und inhaltlichen Bezug zu laufenden Arbeiten aufweisen.

PhD Position: In-situ electron microscopy of metal-support interactions in electrocatalysts
Der Lehrstuhl für Elektronenmikroskopie mit Forschungsschwerpunkt Energiematerialien bietet eine PhD Stelle auf dem Gebiet der in-situ Elektronenmikroskopie an.
Moderne Elektronenmikroskope liefern direkte Einblicke in die atomare Anordnung und chemische Zusammensetzung von (funktionellen) Materialien. Aufgrund der starken Wechselwirkung zwischen Elektronen und Materie werden elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchungen meist im Vakuum durchgeführt. Die generierten Aufnahmen liefern daher detaillierte Einblicke zur untersuchten Probe, die allerdings für sich isoliert in einem thermodynamischen Gleichgewichtszustand vorliegt. Um die Funktionsweise von Katalysatoren besser verstehen zu können, ist es allerdings notwendig, die Struktur-Eigenschaften Korrelation unter relevanten Reaktionsbedingungen zu untersuchen. Durch direkte Beobachtung des reaktions-induzierten dynamischen Wechselspiels mittels in-situ und operando Elektronenmikroskopie lässt sich untersuchen, wie sich die Funktion eines Katalysators aus der Interaktion zwischen Katalysator und chemischer Umgebung erst ergibt.
In einer über den Exzellenzcluster e-conversion finanzierten Doktorarbeit soll die metall-Träger Wechselwirkung von Modellsystemen und Elektrokatalysatoren elektronenmikroskopisch untersucht werden. Die Stelle ist ab sofort verfügbar.

Co-funded by the ANR (French National Research Agency) and the DFG (German Research Foundation), our project investigates how the communication between the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, at contact sites called mitochondria-associated membranes (MAMs), influences development and recovery from metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD; formerly NAFLD). Our project spans in vitro approaches (in both hepatocytes and non-parenchymal cells), in vivo modelling (in mice) and a clinical trial. These are coordinated over 4 partner labs in Paris, Lyon, Munich and Lisbon. We seek to recruit 3 postdocs and 1 technical staff; each position will be based at a partner lab and will require extensive coordination and cooperation with other partner labs.

PhD Student position in immunology
A PhD student position is offered as part of the CRC 1054 “Control and plasticity of cell-fate decisions in the immune system (https://www.sfb1054.med.uni-muenchen.de) in the Department of Infection Immunology headed by Prof. Christina Zielinski at the Leibniz-HKI. The department of Infection Immunology addresses fundamental questions about the mechanistic basis of the human immunological memory. We investigate T-cell communication with the local tissue microenvironment in settings of infections, autoimmunity and cancer. This research has unraveled several novel T-cell functions and immunomodulatory factors (Almeida et al., Science Immunology 2022; Matthias et al. Science Transl Med 2019 & J Clin Invest 2020, Chao et al. Nat Immunol, 2023). The department uses novel cutting-edge technologies in the area of high-dimensional single-cell analysis (scRNAseq, Spectral flow cytometry) to translate fundamental insights into translational applications for human health and disease. The prospective candidate will have the opportunity to investigate the regulation of human tissue resident T-cells and their crosstalk with the microenvironment in solid organ transplantation and cancer.
