The Biomedical Informatics Program (BMI) is hosted within the Department of Health Outcomes and Biomedical Informatics (HOBI) and is closely affiliated with the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI). It engages in a broad spectrum of informatics research and service initiatives across the University of Florida (UF). These services include building the informatics infrastructure for the OneFlorida Clinical Research Network. BMI is responsible for establishing and maintaining the software, infrastructure, and data management processes required for all these networks. Recently, leveraging a $50 million hardware (i.e., HiPerGator AI cluster–top 20 worldwide with 140 NVIDIA SuperPODs and 1,120 A100 GPUs) from NVIDIA, we created GatorTron and GatorTronGPT—the largest clinical large language models (LLMs) trained with all UF Health patients’ clinical notes. This position will work under the guidance of Dr. Xing He, in collaboration with a team of data scientists, clinicians, bioinformaticians and computer scientists to fulfill the research and service missions of the BMI program, especially for NLP projects. A postdoctoral position is available in the Center for Molecular Magnetic Quantum Materials (M2QM) at the University of Florida and Florida State University. The position will be jointly supervised by Prof. Stephen Hill and Prof. Richard Hennig. The project involves fundamental spectroscopic investigations of molecular quantum materials in the Electron Magnetic Resonance (EMR) group at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab, employing state-of-the-art instrumentation available at the MagLab for both continuous-wave and pulsed EPR at high magnetic fields. Additional stimuli, such as light irradiation and electric fields, will also be available to further modulate the quantum properties of the molecules under study. Areas of interest within M2QM that are under active investigation at the MagLab include understanding decoherence processes and the development of strategies for enhancing coherence in molecular spin qubits; demonstration of multi-qubit entanglement and quantum logic operations in magnetic molecules; and exploitation of magnetoelectric coupling and optical activity for realization of electrically and optically switchable spin qubits. The successful applicant should have a PhD in either physics, physical chemistry, or a closely related discipline. Some experience in the use of EPR spectroscopy is preferred. The Denard lab focuses on developing high-throughput tools to evolve and reprogram enzymes that catalyze post-translational modifications (PTM-enzymes), including proteases, kinases, and others. The postdoctoral associate would be involved in several ongoing projects in the lab. One project is to discover modulatory proteins (antibodies, nanobodies, etc…) that can reprogram the activity of PTM-enzymes using a powerful high-throughput discovery platform. In this project, the postdoctoral associate will introduce deep learning to the project to establish sequence function relationships and predict modulator properties from sequence (funded by NIH MIRA) and expand the platform to other enzymes. A Postdoctoral Associate position is available in the Laboratory of Neurogenetics & Neuroscience in the McKnight Brain Institute at the University of Florida, focused on genetic determinants of brain health and disease. The research is funded and directed by Professor Matt Farrer in the Department of Neurology. Over the past 20 years, our team has helped define the genetic etiology of neurodegeneration using a combination of population and pedigree-based molecular genetics (high-throughput sequencing, genotyping and Sanger sequencing), bioinformatics (vcf tools, galaxy, python, perl, java) and applied statistics (R archive, Plink, Beagle, linkage software). Dr. Farrer is best known for his contributions to Parkinson’s disease. The discoveries and insights gained have improved diagnosis and have led to insightful models to advance novel therapeutics into clinical trials. | |||

A Postdoctoral Associate position is available in the LaVoie Lab in the Center for Translational Research in Neurodegenerative Disease at the McKnight Brain Institute. The overall goal of the LaVoie Lab is to elucidate the earliest molecular events responsible for adult onset neurodegenerative diseases. The lab approaches these devastating disorders from both the perspective that specific inherited gene mutations linked to familial forms can provide valuable insight, as well as maintaining a focus on aspects of the far more common sporadic forms. The research is funded and directed by Professor Matthew LaVoie in the Department of Neurology and the lab employs a diverse array of state-of-the-art tools to accomplish these goals including a series of novel knockin animal models, iPSC-based neuronal and glial cultures, and CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing. | |||
