Groningen University in Netherlands invites application for vacant PhD Scholarships, a public research university in the city of Groningen in the Netherlands.

PhD

Mechano-Chemistry for Robots

A sense of touch allows us to handle objects with fine motor skills and navigate the complexities of everyday life. Robots struggle with even simple tasks, because their sensing capabilities remain limited. It is incredibly hard to achieve the level of sophistication and high-density integration of sensing, signal processing, and movement that comes so naturally to us. This project, funded by an European Starting Grant, aims to develop a new class of chemical touch sensors that can be incorporated into robotic prototypes.

Join a rapidly expanding team of PhD students and Postdocs, shape a rapidly emerging field with your insights, and become a forerunner in chemically-driven robotics. The core objective of this PhD project is to synthesize novel mechanophores – molecules that respond to mechanical force – and incorporate them into soft robotic hands to enable a sense of touch in robots. Leverage your synthetic chemistry background and learn more about polymer chemistry, rapid prototyping, and cutting edge analytical techniques.

PhD

PhD position Chemical synthesis of complex bacterial glycans

In the NWO-Vidi project ‘Healthy sugars for a healthy gut’, a fully funded 4-year PhD position is available in the Chemical Glycobiology group of Prof. Marthe Walvoort, in the division of Chemical Biology at the Stratingh Institute for Chemistry, University of Groningen. Research in the Walvoort group is dedicated to understanding the structure-activity relation of carbohydrates, combining the powers of synthetic chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology. One area deals with synthetic method development and production of health-beneficial oligosaccharide structures. The other area is dedicated to the investigation of bacterial protein glycosylation to the point where we can start exploiting it to generate novel antibacterial therapies.

PhD

PhD position in the Comparative History of Stamp Duties in the Early Modern Dutch and British Empires (1.0 FTE)

Are you a motivated researcher with a strong affinity for material culture or paper history, and eager to explore how an innovative form of paper-based taxation shaped early modern political and financial institutions? Would you like to contribute to a comparative study of global empires that considers metropolitan as well as colonial contexts? The University of Groningen invites you to apply for a joint PhD position in History and American Studies.

PhD position: Multi-scale modelling of martensitic and diffusive transformations in green steels (1.0 FTE)

For the National Growth Fund (NGF) project “Groeien met Groen Staal” (GGS), a PhD position for the period of 4 years is available in the context of modelling green steel mechanics from the atomic scale. In this project, the University of Groningen will investigate atomic-scale mechanism of martensitic, bainitic and ferritic atomic-scale interface motion for multi-component alloy systems that are relevant for the new green steels compositions, including impurities and tramp elements. These models should inform higher-scale (microstructural) models of microstructure formation for green steels.
