CUSTOM is an EU MSCA Doctoral Training Network connecting relevant academic and industrial expertise in emerging medical-device technologies across Europe and apply them to the problems of shoulder implants. Many of the current problems (e.g. soft-tissue failures, implant loosening, infection) derive from a top-down, one-size-fits-all approach to implants; CUSTOM plans to invert this approach, based on combining computational, patient-specific design and additive manufacturing to offer complex, custom designs and structures. The project also incorporates multi-functionality as well as blended experimental and in-silico testing to accelerate the path to certification.
This post will contribute to the creation and validation of a digital twin (with biological bone models) to assess and interrogate the issue of implant loosening and wear/abrasion for anatomical and reverse TSR systems. This includes the use of interfacial BEM or FEM friction and wear models, as well as biological bone ingrowth models, to predict primary and secondary fixation. The digital twin then allows a virtual search of the most important variables that affect loosening and migration and enables a subsequent targeted optimization of the implant shape and properties.

We are seeking a Research Fellow to support trial activities, and forward and inversion modelling for quantum technology-based gravity gradient sensors and other geophysical sensor data. The successful candidate will focus on designing, planning and conducting field and large-scale laboratory trials using both classical geophysical sensors such as the Scintrex CG6 gravimeter and Ground Penetrating Radar as well as the quantum technology gravity gradient sensor.

The successful candidate will be responsible for: safely shredding cells using a bespoke instrumented, stabilised shredder; recording data for LCA including mass and energy balances, energy and resource consumption and emissions; characterising cells and recyclates; separating and purifying recyclates including black mass to improve value and recyclability. In this role, you will analyse the types of production scrap that emerge from production processes and identify effective recycling routes for each, drawing on those already developed by the ReLiB team or within the literature. You will perform LCA/TEA calculations on the scrap recycling processes developed within the ReLiB consortium, providing comparisons between alternative processes and considering the suitability of each process to end-of-life (EoL) battery materials. In the future, it is expected that scrap rates will diminish as EoL streams grow and synergies between scrap and EoL recycling must therefore be maintained, so that a smooth transition is possible. You will define future scenarios for scrap and EoL waste streams, prioritising the compatibility of scrap recycling processes for EoL streams.
