In the Engineering and Technology Institute Groningen (ENTEG), we are looking for a talented and motivated PhD student for the development and evaluation of electrocatalysts’ performance and degradation for CO2 and CO conversion in Protonic Ceramic Electrochemical Cells (PCECs). PCECs have the capability of operating at the industrially attractive intermediate temperature range of operation (350-600 °C), enabling the direct production of CH4, higher hydrocarbons (C2, and C3), and alcohols, besides syngas. These emerging technologies hold significant potential for advancing power-to-X (P2X) applications and enabling chemical process electrification and intensification. One of the main challenges is, however, to substantially increase the efficiency and stability of the existing processes through the development of electrocatalytically active and durable materials for electrodes, as well as to deeply understand the pathways of the involved reactions. The PhD project will be part of the HyCarb consortium (https://groenvermogennl.org/en/project/hycarb-hydrogen-and-green-electrons-for-carbon-based-chemistry/) of the National Growthfund GroenvermogenNL. This unique consortium connects 16 knowledge organisations, including 9 universities, and 30 companies—23 clean-tech firms and 7 industrial end-users, covering the entire value chain.

This PhD project examines the fragility of the social contract in the context of identity politics that undermines the stability and cohesion of many societies. It does so by combining theory and insights from the disciplines of philosophy and psychology. The aim of the project is to determine whether and how the social contract, and the institutions it supports, should be strengthened and what role social cohesion can and should play in the process. The project is based on a philosophical, normative assessment that is supported by empirical findings from psychology.

This interdisciplinary PhD project investigates whether humour can bridge divides between opposing social or ideological groups. It does so by combining social psychology with philosophy. The research theorizes humour as an interaction ritual that can foster pluralistic cohesion, valuing both solidarity and differences. The methods consist of a literature review, standardized experiments and philosophical analysis to develop and test a conceptual framework. The ideal candidate is a (near) master’s or research master’s graduate in social psychology or a related field, with strong quantitative skills and an affinity for philosophy. The project will produce both theoretical insights and practical guidelines for using humour in diverse societal settings.

What do the family networks of older migrants in the Netherlands look like, and how do they relate to strengthening or weakening social cohesion? This project uses microdata from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) to analyse differences in the size, structure and spatial distribution of kinship networks among older migrants and non-migrants. This PhD project will compare patterns across diverse migrant groups and explore how these relate to key outcomes such as health, well-being, and loneliness in later life. This position offers the opportunity to work with rich population-level data and contribute to timely debates on ageing, migration and social inequalities.

Governments adopt policies for specific migrant groups. Such policies can help migrant groups thrive. However, they can result in negative responses from other groups who might perceive such measures as preferential treatment at their expense, thereby threatening social cohesion at large. In this PhD project, we aim to analyse how and under which circumstances migrant-specific policies facilitate the integration of migrant groups while simultaneously upholding social cohesion in and between all societal groups. The project will, amongst others, study the effects of tax benefits for knowledge workers on housing dynamics and social cohesion in the Netherlands throughout time.

Education is an important social divide, shaping political attitudes, identities and who interacts with whom. This PhD project investigates why networks are (increasingly) segregated by education and how this fuels polarization around issues like climate change and migration. Moving beyond traditional explanations, the project introduces avoidance as a new mechanism: do people actively avoid educational out-groups, and does this relate to political polarization? Using a combination of register data, ego network surveys, European Social Survey data and behavioural experiments, it offers an exciting opportunity to develop new theory and cutting-edge empirical research on social cohesion in the context of inequality.

The Faculty of Spatial Sciences is looking to appoint a part-time junior researcher for the topic of “Perceptions and Lived Experiences of Accessibility in the Dutch countryside.” visual ethnographic research in the Northern Netherlands? Then this is your opportunity to contribute to an innovative research project at the Chair of Transport Geography at the Faculty of Spatial Sciences.
With this research project, we aim to gain insight into the lived experience of accessibility, complementing more quantitative research on perceived accessibility, in the hope that this will provide new insights for policy and spatial planning. The Chair of Transport Geography is funded by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, and we therefore have close contacts with local, regional, and national policymakers. Through visual ethnographic fieldwork, we aim to investigate and visualize accessibility in rural areas. We are working towards a written academic paper, a Dutch-language report, and a short film or video series. This visual output allows us to directly articulate the voices of rural residents and visualize their experiences. We will present this to policymakers in The Hague in the spring of 2027.

The aim of the project is to develop strategies and practically applicable recommendations for messaging effectively about climate change, whilst taking into account that the epistemic environment is heavily infused with disinformation. Effective messaging is essential for building the social cohesion needed to combat global warming and for avoiding the disruptive effects of unmitigated warming and polarization around climate change issues on social cohesion. To be effective, messaging needs to combat the factual misconceptions which are promulgated, but it should also have a depolarizing effect and help bridge divides between societal groups, making people less vulnerable to the divisive and polarizing strategies of disinformation campaigns and reducing prejudice between groups who disagree on climate-related issues.

The position is part of MS-RADAM (“MultiScale phenomena in RAdiation DAMage”), a European Doctoral Network project funded by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) programme. The project brings together leading academic and industrial partners from eight European countries (Germany, France, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Czech Republic, Sweden, Denmark and Georgia) to train a new generation of interdisciplinary researchers.
MS-RADAM aims to advance the understanding of key radiation-induced biodamage phenomena at the nano- and larger scales, with applications in particle therapy, radiotherapy, and radioprotection. These include the formation of DNA strand breaks by ionising radiation, DNA repair, radiosensitisation by metal nanoparticles, cell survival and radioresistance.
The MS-RADAM research programme combines state-of-the-art computational multiscale modelling (using DFT/TDDFT methods, collision theory, molecular dynamics, stochastic dynamics, Monte Carlo and analytical methods) and its thorough validation using advanced experimental techniques (such as mass spectrometry, electron microscopy, radiochemistry and radiobiology experiments with biomolecular and biological systems such as oligonucleotides, DNA origami, radiosensitising nanoparticles, living cells and multicellular targets).

Creating Common Grounds for Climate Justice Through Artistic Research , a six-year project on climate justice and artistic research in the Caribbean and European parts of the Kingdom of The Netherlands. It offers 10 PhD positions at six universities in collaboration with the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) and four universities of applied sciences. JUST ART PhD candidates will generate new knowledge and critically assess approaches that integrate scientific insights with artistic research to address climate justice. JUST ART PhDs will study and develop concrete cases to learn how art and artistic research can be embedded in ongoing and emerging work on climate justice.
