We are looking for a talented researcher in the broad intersection between quantum information, mathematics and computer science. You will be given resources to start your own group at the Department of Mathematical Sciences or the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. You will be part of the ongoing long term effort to build a superconducting quantum computer at Chalmers together with the companies connected to this project. You will be at the center of an exciting development, catalysing an interdisciplinary research effort between physics, mathematics and computer science.

The Quantum Computer Project and the Wallenberg Center for Quantum Technology
Our goal is to build a quantum computer and to apply it to real-world computational problems that cannot be efficiently solved on a conventional computer. Such problems can be found for example in optimisation, quantum chemistry, materials science, and machine learning.

The Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT) at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, is the platform for building this 100+ qubit superconducting quantum computer and constructing interesting quantum algorithms to run in collaboration with industry partners. We have industrial PhD projects with the companies Jeppesen, AstraZeneca and Volvo AB as well as with Sahlgrenska University Hospital, and are continuously striving to expand our collaboration with industry and the public sector. WACQT is a 12-year initiative, mainly funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation but also the participating universities and industry contribute. WACQT is committed towards promoting career development, gender equality and diversity through networking and supporting activities.

With our current group of more than 60 experimental and theoretical physicists, we have a good understanding of quantum physics. This tenure-track Assistant Professor in Quantum Software will broaden as well as deepen our understanding of the computational and mathematical aspects of quantum computation, such as computational complexity and the classes of problems that will benefit from quantum algorithms to speed up the computations. Quantum Software is indeed a broad field, as indicated by the topics and speakers in our recent workshop in Quantum Software and Optimisation. This includes but is not limited to topics such as Quantum optimisation algorithms, hybrid Quantum-classical algorithms, Quantum machine learning, Quantum error correction and fault tolerance, Quantum simulation and Quantum complexity.

About the position
The appointment as Assistant Professor is a four-year entry-level faculty position with tenure track, whereby the employee has the opportunity to acquire both scientific and pedagogical qualifications. An Assistant Professor is expected to improve their ability to formulate and solve scientific problems, to publish scientific articles, and to develop abilities in teaching and supervision, by means of both practical training and independent study. The aim is to achieve the level of Associate Professor within four years and if successful, you will be offered a permanent faculty position at Chalmers. An assessment will be conducted after two years, and an additional assessment will be conducted towards the end of the period of appointment, see section 6.3.3 in this pdf.

Major responsibilities
The Assistant Professor will as their main responsibility perform and lead research in Quantum Software with support from WACQT and contribute actively to the Quantum Computer project at Chalmers as well as other scientific activities at the department in question. The Assistant Professor will also contribute to education on all levels and supervise master students as well as doctoral students. Responsibilities include participation in departmental and university-wide undertakings as well as in national and international collaborations.

Mandatory qualifications
• Doctoral degree in computer science, mathematics, physics or equivalent; the PhD degree should be completed within seven years prior to the application deadline. An exception can be made if you have been on parental leave or leave due to illness or military service.
• An excellent research track record in the area of Quantum Software
• Conducted research at the highest level, demonstrated by e.g. publications in leading journals of the field, presentations at leading conferences, or granted patents
• Documented teaching experience, e.g. as teaching assistant
• Good communication skills, both written and verbal, in English

Meritorius qualifications
• Post-doctoral appointment or equivalent at a university, institute or organization, which has not granted the candidate’s PhD degree.
• Experience from collaborating with experimental groups

Our offer to you
The starting package includes funding for one PhD student or postdoc. For projects fully aligned with the WACQT quantum computing project, it is possible to receive WACQT funding for an additional PhD student or postdoc.
