Sciences Po created the Émile Boutmy scholarship, named after the founder of Sciences Po (1871), in order to welcome the very best international students from outside the European Union. The Émile Boutmy Scholarship is awarded to top students whose profiles match the admissions priorities of Sciences Po and individual course requirements.
The Émile Boutmy scholarship fund benefits from the generous support of its sponsors (benefactors, companies and foundations) who are eager to allow the most deserving international students to study at Sciences Po. Private sponsors can be in direct contact with scholarship holders during official organised events.
They support the Émile Boutmy excellence scholarship : BNP Paribas, Chalhoub Group, RATP Foundation, L’Oréal, Total.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be: first time applicants, from a non-European Union state, whose household does not file taxes within the European Union, and who have been admitted to the Undergraduate or Master’s programme.
Students who are not eligible are:
- Swiss and Norwegian applicants, since they may be entitled to CROUS scholarships
- Candidates who have dual citizenship, including an EU citizenship
- Candidates from Quebec for master’s degree (since they may take advantage of sliding scale fees same as European applicants). Candidates from Quebec for a bachelor’s degree are eligible
- Master’s level dual-degree candidates. Only applicants for the following dual degrees are eligible:
- the dual degree in Journalism Sciences Po/Columbia University
- the dual degree Sciences Po/Fudan University with the concentration Europe-Asia in Global Affairs (only applicants with Chinese nationality)
- the dual degree Sciences Po/Peking University (only applicants with Chinese nationality)
- BAMA ITAM
- Ph.D. programme students (thesis)
- Candidates for the 1 year Master’s programmes
- Bachelor dual degree candidates (unless as part of a specific agreement)
- Exchange students
- Candidates applying via the French graduate admission procedure
The Émile Boutmy scholarship may not be combined with other scholarships (Eiffel scholarship, AEFE scholarship, BGF…).
This scholarship is awarded based on merit and according to the type of profile sought for this programme. Social criteria may also be taken into account.
This scholarship is not automatically awarded, to apply candidates must follow the instructions below.

Important : It is not possible for students to apply for the Émile Boutmy scholarship after their admission to Sciences Po or during their studies at Sciences Po. Students are therefore responsible for finding another source of funding if they have not been awarded the Emily Boutmy scholarship.
The Admissions Department is responsible for awarding Émile Boutmy scholarships. Please note that your scholarship request will only be taken into account if you are admitted to one of our eligible programmes.

- Deadline for undergraduate programme (applicants from French secondary schools): mid-June 2022.

How can I apply for the Émile Boutmy scholarship?
Applicants must indicate that they are applying for the Émile Boutmy scholarship in the “Financial information” section of their Sciences Po application.
If you are currently in deferral you can apply by email (at: admissions@sciencespo.fr) if you are in one of the following situations:
- you did not apply to this scholarship in your application form
- you had applied and obtained this scholarship last year but lost it due to your deferral
I am a registered student at Sciences Po (at undergraduate or graduate level) may I apply for the Émile Boutmy scholarship?
No, to be eligible for the scholarship, students must be first time applicants.
I am a third year undergraduate Sciences Po student and I hold an Émile Boutmy scholarship. How can I apply for the Émile Boutmy scholarship at graduate level?
The Émile Boutmy scholarship is automatically renewed if the student chooses to continue its graduate studies at Sciences Po. No further action is necessary.

I am currently living in a E.U. country however my parents do not, is it possible for me to apply?
Sciences Po takes into account the tax residence (E.U. / Outside E.U.) of the parents and not of the student. For us to take into consideration your country of residence you must be eligible for financial independence. You will find information on financial independence online.
Students whose parents have a tax residence in the E.U. cannot apply for the Émile Boutmy scholarship.
I am currently in deferral. Is it possible for me to apply?
Candidates who are currently in deferral can apply to the Émile Boutmy scholarship by email (at: admissions@sciencespo.fr) if they are in one of the following situations:
- they did not apply to this scholarship in their application form
- they had applied and obtained this scholarship last year but lost it due to a deferral
It is not possible for you to apply again if your scholarship request was previously refused.
What is the deadline to provide the language test?
You have until the scholarship application deadline to provide the applicable language test(s) results.
I am applying for the Émile Boutmy scholarship, can I be exempted from settling the application fees?
It is mandatory to pay the application fees. However some applications can be exempted depending on their situations, for further details we invite you to check the Admissions website.
What documents do I need to provide as part of my application for the Émile Boutmy scholarship?
- For an application at undergraduate level you must provide a proof of income and documents explaining your family situation (e.g. income tax return for both parents, payslips, divorce certificate, unemployment benefits, documents related to alimony, child support or retirement pensions, death certificate…).
- For an application at graduate level no additional documents must be attached, however note that we might ask applicants to provide a proof of income if necessary.
I am currently working, should I mention my income or my parents income?
In order to calculate your tuition fees, Sciences Po’s system accounts for the total of income earned by the student’s tax household, which is as a general rule composed of the income of your parents.
In case you are eligible for financial independence, your tax household will then only include your own income. You will find more information regarding financial independence on our website.
I was just admitted to Sciences Po, however the status of my scholarship application remains under review, why?
Only admitted students will have their applications reviewed for the Boutmy Scholarship. Therefore you will first get your admission decision and then get or not a Boutmy scholarship. The results are generally published at the end of June for undergraduate applicants and by the end of April for Master’s level applications.
I was just admitted to Sciences Po, however I am still waiting for my scholarship application results, should I accept the admission offer?
We strongly encourage you to accept the admission offer while waiting for the Emile Boutmy scholarship decision. Should you not be granted the scholarship you will still be able to request a deferral by contacting the Administrative registration office.
Please note that if you request a deferral without waiting for the grant decision, you will not be able to apply again for the Boutmy scholarship.
I was granted the Émile Boutmy scholarship, however I do not know where to attach my scholarship certificate?
During your administrative registration, you must declare yourself a Sciences Po scholarship holder in step 2 and upload your certificate in step 5 of registration.
I am an Émile Boutmy laureate and I don’t know how to accept the scholarship?
You must simply accept the admission offer and attach your dated and signed certificate in your student portal during your administrative registration.
