The tasks include research and development work in Physiology. The Professor is expected to lead research and scientifically represent his/her subject. This includes leading staff and operative activity.

The Professor is also expected to attract external research grants in competition and fund the development and running costs of his/her own research group. The tasks also include teaching/ supervision and examination in the subject area Physiology in education at undergraduate and advanced level, especially at medical, dental and specialist nursing programs, but teaching in other programs and educations and/or in related subject areas or general competences for vocational education can also come to be included. The Professor, who will be an active researcher, will also conduct training on doctoral level in the subject area. It is the duty of Professors in particular to be responsible for examinations within research level education. Development of new courses at undergraduate, advanced and postgraduate level is also included in the tasks. Administrative tasks and assignments within the department and Medical Faculty is included. Teaching at a place other than the place of stationing may occur and will in part be done with Internet-based methods at a distance. Teaching is in Swedish and English.

Place of stationing is Umeå (but work in another place may occur).

Qualification requirements

Eligible to be employed as a Professor is one who has demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical skills.

Scientific skills refers to independent research efforts, ability to plan and lead research and the ability to communicate research with the surrounding society.

Pedagogical skills refer to documented experience of planning, implementation, examination and evaluation of teaching and a demonstrated reflective approach to students’ learning and one’s own role as a teacher.

To be eligible for employment, the applicant must have a documented ability to teach in Swedish and English.

To be eligible, the applicant is expected to be a nationally and internationally recognized researcher, based on the tasks of leading research and scientifically representing his/her subject, and furthermore, the applicant must demonstrate documented experience as a main supervisor in postgraduate education from admission until the dissertation, based on the duties as an examiner in postgraduate education. Further is required for eligibility a documented ability to receive external research grants in competition.

To be eligible for employment, the applicant must have documented experience of research in Physiology.

To be eligible for employment, the applicant must have documented subject competence in the teaching subject Physiology.

Assessment criteria

As a basis for assessment when employing a Professor, the degree of such skills that are required for eligibility for employment, i.e. scientific and pedagogical skills, shall apply. In addition, the degree of administrative skills and proficiency in academic leadership shall apply.

A general assessment basis for teachers at Umeå University is good collaboration skills as well as the competence and general suitability needed to perform the tasks well.

As much care shall be given to the examination of the pedagogical skills as the examination of the scientific skills.

The weighting of assessment criteria

Upon appointment, merits will be weighted as follows: scientific skills (3), pedagogical skills (2). In addition, the degree of administrative skills and proficiency in academic leadership (1).

When assessing the scientific skills, for this position, special emphasis will be put on independent research initiatives, innovation, timeliness, quality and originality within ongoing research in  Physiology and received external research grants as the main applicant.

When assessing the pedagogical skills, for this position, special consideration will be given to documented experience of planning, implementing and evaluating education on basic, advanced and postgraduate level in Physiology. Experience of supervision and examination will also be taken into account. For a position as Professor, documented experience as main supervisor for at least two doctoral students until dissertation is expected.

Administrative skills can be demonstrated through experience in undergraduate education planning, skills to develop and lead others as well as skills to administer e.tc.

Skills in academic leadership can be demonstrated through positions of trust in academia and in research councils.
